William Hayes & Mary Wright

Sally’s five-great Grandparents:

William Hayes ca 1710 – 1784 | parents
& bef Sept 1731 Mary Wright bef 1715 – aft 1784 | parents
of Bennetts Creek, Gates County, North Carolina

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!

“William Hayes planter of Bennetts Creek moved to the northern part of Chowan Precinct
east of the Chowan River in what is now the Reynoldson District of Gates Co, NC.”
After some research I have ascertained that this William Hayes can not be
the son of Peter Hayes and Mary Sledge of Halifax Co.
Perhaps he is the son of the William Hayes of Nansemond on the 1704 rent roll
or perhaps John Hays of Bertie Co. [Capt Jacob John Hayes]
William Hayes married Mary daughter of Joseph Wright and his wife Elizabeth Yeates.
Elizabeth Wright was the daughter of John Yeates who died Sept 18, 1731
and who bequeathed clothing in his will (Nansemond Co ) to Mary Hayes, his granddaughter.
Joseph Wright of Upper Norfolk County owned property in northern Chowan.

1731 Mary’s grandfather John Yeates left her a bequest in his will of 18 Sept calling her Mary Hayes
1740 Called for jury duty to New Bern
(Colonial & State Records Vol IV p 522)
1747/48 Bought 60 acres from James Brown on Bennetts Creek Chowan Co.
1754 Mustered for military duty in French and Indian War
1761 William Hayes & Edward Warrin securities for James Brown
1777 William Hayes appears in Gates County Tax List for the last time.
[he turned sixty in 1778]
1784 Will of William Hayes in probate Aug Ct 1784

2. Wright Hayse 1731/1740 – bef Feb 1795

note: I speculate Mary is the daughter of Hance Hofler d 1769 Chowan Co -smk

4. Sarah Hayse still a Hayse in 1784

One thought on “William Hayes & Mary Wright”

  1. Hi – I read where you do not think that William Hayes father is Peter Hayes. Just curious. What is your research on this? Also, I think you have John Hayes born after the death of his father Peter.
