“the immigrant”

John Cross ca 1642 – ca 1702 | his parents
& ca 1670 unknown
of Nansemond County VA

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!
from records kept in the family of Dr. William Cordwell Cross of Cherokee, Alabama

“John Cross the immigrant was born about 1642 in England. According to family history, the Crosses were supporters of Oliver Cromwell against the Crown. With the restoration of King Charles II in 1660, they were expatriated and transported to the Colony of Virginia before 1666.
In 1667 John Cross was granted eight hundred acres of land at the head of Mill Creek, a tributary of the Nansemond River in Nansemond County VA.
This is the southern part of the county, near the North Carolina boundary and the town of Somerton.
John married around 1670. His son Henry, our ancestor, was born about 1677. Undoubtedly there were other children of whom we are unaware.
This John Cross died circa 1702”
John Cross was on the list of twenty persons for whose transportation Thomas Mason was granted 1000 acres in Upper Parish of Nansemond County on 29 March 1666.
Index of Patents and Grants in Nansemond County under Royal Government Book 6 – p 193
“To all wherever and whoever, know ye that I, the said Will Desheloy, Knt. give and grant unto John Cross, eight hundred acres of land in Nansemond County, at the head of a creek called Mill Creek, which falls off into the southern branch of the Nansemond River: beginning . . .”
from “The Cross Family of Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama” by William C Cross, 1994

Henry Cross ca 1677 – ca 1737 | his parents
& ca 1704 unknown
of Nansemond County VA

“Henry Cross, son of John Cross, was born ca 1677 in Nansemond County VA. A land grant to Henry Cross dated 15 Dec 1704 for 143 acres lying and being on the north side of Sumerton Creek, in the Upper Parish of Nansemond County . . .
“Little is known of Henry other than that he married ca 1704 and his son John was born ca 1705. Henry died circa 1737.”

Hmm. There was a James Cross who was witness 7 Mar 1714 to a power of attorney Henry Baker to Thomas Bray. Chowan Deed Bk B#1 p53.

John Cross ca 1705 – 1769/83 | his parents
& ca 1726 Susannah ca 1710 – aft 1783
of Nansemond County VA

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!

John Cross, son of Henry Cross, was born ca 1705 Nansemond Co, VA
On 15 Aug 1737 John Cross was issued a patent to 257 acres on the south side of Somerton Swamp.
He died sometime between 1760 when he is mentioned in the Vestry book of the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co VA [also listed as paying taxes in Hertford Co 1768 and 1769] and the 1783 census when his wife Susannah is listed as head of the family.

Children of John Cross and wife Susannah:
1. William Cross 1730 –

3. Elisha Cross d ca Aug 1809
a. James Cross d Nov 1821

Louise Vann Boone in “the Vann Family.” – “Our definite knowledge begins with Cyprian Cross I, who with five brothers was in Gates in the early 18th century. Hardy, William and Jonathan Cross were in Gates County near the Nansemond County, VA line, Cyprian, David and Abel Cross, in Gates County near the Chowan River. Cyprian Cross lived where the Story’s now live. They are descendents of Taylor Cross.”

Henry Cross

So as we can see the candidates for the father of Etheldred are David, Elisha, Priscilla and Sarah.

Priscilla 100100 00111 Probable widow of Elisha who died 1809

Sarah 011100 11110 Sarah deeded land to Charity Goodman her sister
11/1822.

Willis 310010 10010 Suspect Willis is son of David Cross above.
Henry Cross
descent chart (my no references source) also believes that to be the case.

So as we can see the candidates are David, Elisha, Priscilla and Sarah.

Known relationships with above Miles/Mary married 1825 adopt family of
above
Elisha beginning in 1825 who was murdered in 1824.
Willis suspected son of David adopts family of Miles/Mary when they die in 1839.
Thus one of David/Elisha is a likely candidate.
Of course none of my Cross lists have either David or Elisha with a daughter named Mary thus I’m trying educated guesses and that’s where I remain….
Curently I’m waiting on a Gates deed index listing to see where Miles
acquired his property. He appears to be living near Willis Cross who I
presume acquired some of his from David and thus Mary may have as well.
Thus David Cross is my best guess for Mary’s father for the moment

  1. I am trying to research the last person listed on your research results: Jonathan Cross. I am trying to prove that this Jonathan Cross is the same man who died some time after 10 Jul 1810, when he is shown on a deed in Cumberland Co NC. His son is Edward Cross b 14 Apr 1780 who married Elizabeth Ann Smith in 1809 in Cumberland Co NC. Edward’s mother was Sally. Edward’s Civil War record has a the pages of a family bible. I appreciate all the hard work you put into your research. Do you have any additional information on Jonathan Cross?

  2. Looking for Elisha T Cross, married Grace E. Wright. A time period 1840-1900. Searching for Elisha father. Census in 1900 finds him no longer living. I am unaware of the fathers name. Last name Cross. Location Gates, NC or Nansemond County VA
    Thank You Lisa
