Anna Griffin McCoy wrote “I remember the real “Sunday Dinners” and watermelons in the Tom Evans’ home when we spent the summer at the Evans’ Place during the canning season. There were two young boys, but old enough to hitch a horse to a cart to carry the cousins for a ride. As the house and barns were quite a distance from the main road, the drive down to the gate and back several times was a full morning’s fun. The little girls were allowed to take turns holding the reins. They also had a Billy Goat and little cart– that wasn’t so much fun, because the goat ran too fast and went where he wanted to go. Of course THAT brought many laughs from the boys.”

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!

I think this Robert Evans was the son of the Robert Evans who died in Bertie Precinct ca 1727.

Ann Lane was the daughter of Christopher Lane and wife Christina. Need to look further to find if she is wife of Robert II or Robert III

Now – there is a record in 1727 of a Robert Evans’s estate sale in Bertie Co by his adm. Ann. Seems there were two Robert Evans with wives named Ann – one who died in 1727 in Bertie Co [prob born ca 1675] and the other died in 1745 in Bertie County.
There is a record of a Robert Evans buying at an estate sale in 1728.

  1. Hi Sally,

I just came across proof that the elder Robert Evans in Bertie (-1727) was a son of William Evans (-1706) of Isle of Wight VA, and Robert (-1727’s) wife was a daughter of Henry and Katharine Bradley:
    9 Apr 1706 Isle of Wight VA DB 2 p 34
Robert [RE] Evans of North Carolina to George Bonn of IOW VA
“most especially in consideration that my father William Evans did receive of James Bonn dec’d, the father of the said George Bonn, full payment for the said land hereafter mentioned… 800 acres in IOW on Beaver Dam Swamp bought of Matthew Strickland by my father William Evans
wit John Chapman, John Boon? [Brown?]
    AND
    9 Apr 1708 Isle of Wight VA DB 2 p 84
Robert [RE] Evans of Carolina, planter, to John Daughtry of VA, planter
400a in IOW at Kingsale given to me by the will of my father William Evans
wit Robert Brocke, Thomas Giles, Joseph Chapman
acknowledged in IOW in open court 1 May 1708 by the said Robert Evans, and “Katharine Bradley mother of the said Robert evans wife [illeg, abbr] and voluntarily relinquished her right of dower”

Robert Evans (-1727) had an adjoining neighbor in Chowan/Bertie named Henry Bradley (see Bertie Deed Book B p 326 and p 410). This Henry Bradley patented 640 acres on the west shore of Chowan River on 27 Aug 1714, claiming as his headrights himself, Katharine Bradley, Katharine Bradley Jr, Robert Bradley, Joseph Bradley, Walter Konrell, Charles Merritt, Eleanor Merritt (believed to be the brother-in-law and sister of Peter Evans, with whom they co-owned land on the south bank of the Chowan near present-day Winton), John Merritt, Michael Merritt, Charles Merritt Jr, John Early, and Mary Early. So evidently Robert Evans, son of William, migrated to North Carolina before 1706 and married a daughter of Henry Bradley and his wife Katharine before 1708, perhaps a decade before.
Significantly, Moseley’s 1717 tax list shows two heads of household named Robert Evans in yet-to-be-divided Chowan: “Rt Evans Petty Shore” with 200 acres and 1 poll (therefore no sons over 16 at home), and “Rt Evans” with 100 acres and 2 polls beside Samuel Woodward with no land and 1 poll. (Woodward had purchased Robert Evans’ 1712 patent, 275 acres on a branch of Chinkapin Swamp on the west side of the Chowan River, but he had sold it in 1715.

    As I have noted elsewhere,
“Painstaking analysis of pertinent deeds and grants indicates that Robert (-1727) resided at Beech Island on the west bank of the Chowan (probably today’s Cow Island, directly across the river from the mouth of Indian Creek). He also owned land at Loosing Swamp, south of Ahoskie. Besides Henry Bradley his neighbors included Lawrence Mague, Thomas Bray, Henry Barnes, Lewis and Edward Bryan, William Bush, John Hill, and John Purcell. All of his land was far enough south to remain in Bertie after Hertford’s creation, near the county line.
“Robert (-1745) lived up around the bend, on the south bank of the Chowan at Petty Shore in present-day Hertford County, opposite the wetlands between Fort Island and the mouth of Sarum (Cole) Creek in present-day Gates County. Additionally he owned land farther up the Chowan watershed on Cattawaskie Swamp, between today’s Ahoskie and Murfreesboro, as did his father Peter Evans and the widow Elinor Early.
“Robert (-1727), whose yeoman-level estate inventory included a pair of millstones (Bertie Deed Book B, p 242), was quite possibly an uncle of Robert (-1745), who owned a canoe but no millstones at the time of his death. They had several allies in common. In 1713 Robert (-1727) bought James Curlee’s 1 Jul 1713 patent of 516 acres from John [JE] Early and wife Mary (Bush), transportees of Robert’s father-in-law Henry Bradley, which patent John Early had purchased that same day from James [J] Curlee, son-in-law of William and Elinor Early. Probably James Curlee and Robert Evans (-1727) were connected in a way that precluded a financial transaction between them at the time, eg perhaps Robert (-1727) was administering Curlee’s father-in-law’s estate.”

So apparently Robert (-1727) was a son of William, and Robert (-1745) was a son of Peter. [His wife Ann was not a Lane, but that’s another issue.]

    Barbara

  2. Hi Sally,

Thank you for collecting and publishing all of this information. My grandfather was from Bertie, but we know very little about the family. Sites like yours are very helpful and give a sense of the community.

I’ve added some additional info to your list, i.e. daughter of James Evans (1825-1866) on the peter-evans-sarah-wynns page, found in Ancestry:
    (daughter) Armetta/Mittie Louise Evans (1860-1926)
m Starkey Ward, Jr. (1855-1928). They had 11 children:
    i. Eddie Ward of Aulander NC (1880-1958), m Nettie Modlin
    ii. Ada Ward (1881-1895)
iii. Tulia Neal Ward (1883-1954),m John R. Cooke, Sr., had Richard, Robert
    and Lila Ward
iv. Lillie Dale Ward (1884-1968), m Cephus Sitterson of Windsor NC
had ch: Ray, Jasper, Katherine, C B Sitterson Jr and Beecher Ward.
    v. Norman Askew Ward (1885-1940), m Bettie Lyde May, ch: Norman,
    Wallace, Henry, Jennings
vi. Nellie G. Ward (1888-1945), m Cleveland Mitchell,
had ch: Cecil Ward, Rudolph, Louise, Rufus, Earl and Edith Mitchell
    vii. Willie Brown Ward (1889-1918)
    viii. Henry Beecher Ward (1892-1894)
ix. Mamie Pearl Ward (1895-1958), m Irving Blanchard
    x. Irma Bernice Ward (1897-1978), m Willie Hoggard,
xi. Katie Lee Ward (1899-1972), m Jack Jenkins, ch: William, Robert,
    Dorothy

James Evan’s wife was likely Nancy Harrell, based on the entry on Mittie Evan’s death certificate (who is only cited as Mrs. Starkey Ward).
