This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!

Robert Battin Cobb was born 14 Nov 1808 on his family’s farm in Southampton, VA. the son of Leonard Cobb and his wife Martha Owens. Robert’s mother could read; so he was taught to read. He became a school teacher by age seventeen and he continued to teach school until he was 72 years old.

Robert Battin Cobb married first on 5 April 1831 Mary Ann Rebecca Parker, daughter of Silas Parker of Mapleton and his first wife Deliah Hasty. Silas was the son of Peter and Ivarina Parker. Mary Ann Rebecca Parker and her twin brother James were born 13 Dec 1811. Mary Ann Rebecca died in childbirth with a twin of the surviving child.

Robert Battin Cobb married second 23 Dec 1832 Martha Moore, daughter of Allen and Ann Warren Moore. Martha was born 11 Jan 1812. In 1834 the Ahoskie Baptist Church “licensed him to preach.” Martha died 19 Feb 1837 age 25 years, one month and eight days. Both of her little daughters had died before the end of June.

Robert Battin Cobb married on 19 April 1838 his third wife, Temperance Elizabeth Valentine, born 5 Dec 1812, daughter of Lemuel Valentine of Northampton Co in 1806 and Julia Britt. Temperance died 10 April 1891 age 78.
