The Karl Hartman Family ca 1867 [say 1870]

note from Joan –The story is that the picture was taken in two shots, so the siblings could wear the same dress.
another note from Jeffrey Perls — One anecdote is that the photographer thought the family did not look rich enough so he painted rings on their fingers to add the appearance of wealth.
On the back of original picture owned by Ruth Pollak Lasser of White Plains is written; Taken in NY abt. 1866. Missing is Sophie Popper who was married and living abroad until 1880.
(I’m not sure who wrote all this-my ggrandmother?.)
The order of people in the picture is from left to right: Katie Schalle; Theresa Proops; Barney; Julia Levy; Karl, Jacob and Eva; Josephine Lederer; Caroline Weiss [really Anna Weiss]; Bertha Leffler; Anna Weiskopf [that is Caroline Weiskopf]
(that is how it is written.)
Now we know that Karl and Eva and family emigrated to NYC! Perhaps we can find more records.

  1. MY NAME ANTHONY KOESTLER (TONY). I HAVE ENJOYED YOUR WEB SIT AND HAVE ADDED DETAILS TO TREE.
ON ONE OF THE PAGES ABOUT HARTMANS I FOUND THIS LINE “I. Janice V. Poliak 1910 Manhatten -1990 Danbury, CT;”
HOW IS THIS RELATED TO YOY?

  2. Hi Sally!
Under Karl Hartman and Eva Stadler you ask: Was “Chitenhaven” in NY?
You may be referring to “Schuttenhoffen” which is a German name for the town of “Suice,” now in the Czech Republic, where some ancestors were born.

  3. Hi Sally, I also have a copy of the Hartman family picture with identifications on the back hand written by Julia Hartman Levy, my great grandmother. One anecdote is that the photographer thought the family did not look rich enough so he painted rings on their fingers to add the appearance of wealth. The following are some corrections/expansions:
