Howell Jones was Hertford County’s Clerk & Master in Equity from 1806 until his death in 1831.

Their daughter Ann was born 30 June 1834.
James Ward died 27 February 1843.
In December 1846 Elizabeth married the Rev. James Delke (1793-1862).
(He’s who cut the trees on the front lawn so his sweet-potato patch could get enough sun.)
Delke died in 1862.
After her daughter Ann’s home burned in 1866 in Murfreesboro, NC, Ann, her husband Major John W Moore and family made their home
with Elizabeth at Maple Lawn.

Mary H Thomas Jones 1824 – 1897

Howell Morgan Jones 6 Aug 1819 – 15 July 1865
married 3 Feb 1842 Mary Henrietta Thomas 1824 – 1897
Mary Henrietta was the daughter of Abram Thomas.
“Howell M Jones died at his place near Petty Shore, July 15th. He was modest, wise, and entirely honest. He had been for many years active justice of the peace, and was a pillar of the Baptist Church at Bethlehem. He was a grandson of that James Jones so conspicuous in the early years of the century, and nephew of James Sidney Jones so prominent in our courts previous to 1832.” John W Moore in HSHC

Children of Howell Morgan Jones 1819 – 1865 & Mary Henrietta Thomas:
1. Sgt. James Thomas [Jim] Jones 14 Nov 1842 – 3 June 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor
[Four Hertford Co. companies were in the Battle of Cold Harbor.] . . there was general regret at the death of James Thomas Jones, 1st sergeant of Capt. Pipkin’s company. He disappeared when the enemy broke across the lines and after search and weeks of anxious waiting his companions surrendered the hope that he was taken prisoner. His heart broken mother had lost her husband a year before [later], and even months after peace was made retained the hope of his return. His portion of each meal was set aside bet he came no more, and all that is yet known is, that he was not.”
Major J W Moore
Dear Aunt Sally: Yesterday I found some notes from a conversation with Bill and Johnnie Bazemore. James Thomas Jones was known in the family as Jim. He as home on furlough from the Confederate Army sitting at the table eating. Somebody ran in and said that the Yankees were riding up. He went out into the woods to hide and was never seen again.
Once the Yankees arrived they made Mary Thomas Jones order her servants to push a wagon up to the smokehouse and load up all in the meat in it so they could carry it away. The farm was bombarded by the Union gunboats from Petty Shore. Howell Abram Jones – known to his nephews as Uncle Abe – found an unexploded cannon ball on the farm and brought it up to the house. He told his nephews that he was scared of messing with it at first. However, he unscrewed the cork and emptied out the powder. It became a favorite pastime of the men and boys to see how far they could throw the ball. I have seen it many times. James

  1. Also want to mention I found a Civil War Pension record filed in NC by America Jones on behalf of her husband James Jones. She first filed him as an invalid in 1892 then again as his widow in 1908. Trying to figure out if this is a different couple with the same name.

  2. Thank you for sharing this wonderful information and pictures! I’m a descendant of Belle Jones (daughter of James Jones and America Wade, married William Patrick Comstock in MS). I found James and America in the 1860 Fed Census in Chickasaw County, MS, with children: Robert (M), Lucy (F), James (M), Emma (F), Belle (F), Crawford (M) and Sarah (F). Seems my Jones’ line up with your James Adolphus Jones except there is no “Thomas Bell Jones” b. 1852 in their household in the 1860 census record. My 3x ggma is Belle Jones b. 1852 same as your Thomas Bell. Is it possible your Thomas Bell is actually my gma Belle? Thank you for any assistance you can provide in clearing this up.

  3. I am the daughter of Thomas Burton Jones, Jr., son of Thomas Burton Jones who was married to Stella Register and Mary Loraine Tallant. I have been trying to find out whatever became of my uncle Dan Jones. If you have any information concerning my family, I would love to learn about it. I can also give you information regarding the deaths of my father and uncle Ben Jones.
