e-mail from Kendall Sparkman
The grandchildren Charney, Lewis and Susannah Sparkman and Sally Pettit are the children by the second wife (as there are older surviving children not mentioned in Stephen Eure’s will) of John Sparkman, namely Arcadia Eure. This John relocated to Dobbs County during the Revolutionary War, and afterwards to Onslow County in 1790. John was deceased by 1795, at which date John was also the father to several other children, including John Jr., Christiany and Treasy, as well as Jolly, William and Miles (the latter three of which preceded Stephen Eure in death). After John’s death, Arcadia remarried to Nathaniel Pettit, who died in 1808. Charney Sparkman, married in 1798, and a witness on Onslow Co. deeds as early as 1798, appears to have been born in 1779/1780, as his next older sister, Christiany survived through 1850 and her birthdate can be established from census records as 1777/1778.This is probably more information than you want, but these family relationships can be traced through the following Onslow County records with respect to 400a of which John Sparkman was seized at his death:

Phil Harris’s 5 great grand parents

Moore Carter aft 1738 – 1805 | his parents
& ca 1760 Elizabeth Lewis? – ca 1805 | her parents
of Gates Co NC

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!

This Moore Carter is either the son or grandson of Alexander Carter and wife Ann Barnes of Gates County. He is not included in the Muster Roll of the Militia of 25 Nov 1754 which would have included any male over the age of 16.

e-mail from Phil Harris:
Moore Carter (of Gates) bought a parcel of land which he in turn sold to William Williams.
William Williams then in turn sold the same parcel to someone else.
All three transactions can be found in Mona Taylor’s “Abstracts of Deeds Books A-5” for Gates County.
On the first two transactions where Moore Carter bought and sold the land, it is described as being part of a parcel “patented by Henry Hackley on April 14, 1702” [along the west side of Bennett’s Creek].
On the transaction 1789 where William Williams sold the same parcel [DB 1 Book 2 p 124] it is described as being part of a parcel “patented by Moore Carter on April 14, 1752”. I am now convinced that the last description is in error. It should have read the same as in the first two transactions.

Abstract of Will: Moore Carter, Gates County, 29 Dec 1800; May Court 1805; Daughters Elizabeth, Molly and Polly Carter, son Lewis, Wife Elizabeth, son Lewis Exr. Test Geo. Williams, Wm Brooks.

A number of transactions for Moore Carter but nothing on his 600 acres listed in the 1784 tax listing.
Apparently he acquired that before the formation of Gates County

3 Apr 1780 – bought 100 acres from Sarah Odom and Charles King – part of 800 acre Henry Hackley grant in 1702.

14 May 1783 – bought 200 acres from Treasury of NC – east side of Meherin River.

8 Nov 1785 – sold 30 acres to Charles Eure – part of the Hackley grant.

13 Feb 1789 (recorded May 1789) – sold 13 acres to William Williams – part of the Hackley grant.
Williams sold this in Feb 1790 when it was incorrectly described as the “Moore Carter grant in 1752

10 Nov 1789 – bought 42 acres from sheriff Isaac Hunter forfeited by Thomas Green – on Lickingroot Branch

19 Nov 1795 (recorded Feb 1796) – sold the 42 acres on Lickingroot Branch to Alice and Martha Green.

Charles A Carter in the son of Charles Carter who married Nov 1788 Ann Austin and died before the 1790 census.

Charles A Carter married 20 Feb 1809 in Gates County Luda Eure the daughter of Capt. Charles Eure and Selia.

  1. You may want to check this out…..
William Carter married Prudence Williams. They had a daughter, Emeline Amelia Carter (19 Feb 1851-18 Oct 1930). She married William Hoggard Carter (1831-Aft 1880). He is the son of Wiley Carter and Nancy Hoggard. You have her listed as Emelia ?

Thought you might like the connection. I saw a couple of other things as I was scanning your website but didn’t realize you had an email connection at the bottom or I would have taken notes.

My maternal grandmother was a Carter from south Georgia and my GGG Grandfather was Brigham Young so I have been working on my family tree for several years trying to pick up pieces of information from anywhere possible.

    Thanks,
    Beth
