John Sessoms & Ann Harrell

The Sessoms Family of Hertford and Bertie Counties, NC
Next-door Neighbors to the Jones/Moore family for over 200 years

John Sessoms ca 1739 – Feb 1785 | his parents
& ca 1768 Ann Harrell ca 1754 – 12 Dec 1793 | her parents
of White Plains, Hertford Co, NC

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!

John Sessoms married ca 1768 Ann Harrell in Hertford County, North Carolina.
John Sessoms was born ca 1739
the son of Culmer Sessoms and his wife Mary Wynns.
Ann Harrell was born ca 1754 the daughter of John Harrell of Hertford Co NC.

Their son William recorded their deaths in his Bible
as well as the deaths and births of many of his siblings.
This Bible is in the Digital Collection of the Library of Virginia.
John died Feb 1785 and his wife Ann on the 12th of Dec 1793.
I found this record in the state archives
1786 – Ann Sessoms granted adm. to estate of John Sessoms, 3rd day of March 1786, Sam Harrell Clk.

They named their plantation White Plains and erected several impressive buildings which fell into disrepair while unoccupied following their deaths.
Today there is nothing to mark the spot except a few large oak trees deep in the forest where years ago the Pitch Landing-Pine Tree Road crossed the Winton-Colerain thoroughfare. [James Moore.]

Death of Mrs. J. W. Sessoms: After an extreme and painful illness of nine weeks, Mrs. J. W. Sessoms passed away Saturday morning December 17, 1898[.] She had the best medical aid, and all that loving friends and devoted children could do for her was done. The tenderest and most loving care and attention was lavished upon her but God saw fit to rob us of her presence and we had to see her go. Through her entire illness she ever patient and submissive, never complaining and as long as conscious, she was always ready to talk cheerfully to every one. Her place cannot be filled.
As a wife, she was true and devoted, as a mother never too tired to render any service to her children and ever watchful of their we[l]fare and interests. Everybody loved her both old and young and to her many friends, her death is a great blow.
Her home was her pastors, and amid her many domestic cares and duties, she always found time for all interests connected with the church and Sabbath school. She was laid to rest in the Methodist churchyard Sunday afternoon on Dec. 18, 1898. Her funeral was largely attended by those who loved her in life and who will never forget her though she has gone before. She leaves a husband and four loving and devoted children to mourn their loss. . . A good woman has gone to her reward and it can truthfully be said of her that “she did what she could.” ONE WHO LOVED HER.

  1. Sally, I am in awe of the amount of material you organize and post. As a Harrell researcher, I have found many nuggets on your website. I wonder if you have seen any proof that that John Sessoms’ wife Ann was a Van Pelt. (As you know, there were several Sessoms-Van Pelt marriages in Hertford.) Reason I wonder is that the names of their children Nathan and Samuel H. scream Harrell to me – as these were names of the two eldest apparent sons of John Harrell Esq of Hertford. John also appears to have had a son named William, and this Sessoms line also has offspring named William Harrell Sessoms (1771-) and Harrell Bell Sessoms (1806-1838), without any explanation for the Harrell. So it seems possible that John Sessoms’ wife Ann was a daughter of John Harrell.

      1. I am a Van Pelt researcher, descended from my maternal grandmother. Although the line of Jan [John] Van Pelt & Maria Perrine is not my direct line, my extensive record includes all the lines beginning with the progeny of Teunis Laenen Van Pelt & Gritje Antonis. I discovered early on that the only way to substantiate anything was to create a record that encompassed the line in it’s entirety as it helped with accuracy in my research considering all the like-names!

I have read with interest your findings and thoughts on John Sessoms ca 1735-1785 and his wife, Ann. I have long questioned that his wife was a Van Pelt as seems to be perpetuated on numerous genealogies. Children born to Jan Van Pelt [s/o Jan & Maria (Perrine) Van Pelt] & Catrina Bowman that were substantiated in baptismal records of the Staten Island Reformed Dutch Church of Port Richmond, NY: Maria 25 Apr 1731; Trientje 14 Sep 1742; Neeltje 6 May 1745. A baptism for a daughter, Ann, ca 1754 is not found and I did look several years before and after 1754. My notes show Johh Sessoms ca 1715-1785 married 1768 NC [can’t find my source on marriage date] and his wife Ann born ca 1754 would have been age 14 at the time! Possible but doubtful?

Barbara Harrell’s message 2015 made me sit up and take notice! I would very much like to contact her for further information on Ann Harrell and her father John.

Currently, I surmise that the Van Pelt – Sessom connection is with the marriages of 1) William Harrell Sessom & Elizabeth Van Pelt 1781 – 1826 [d/o ???; Davis & Shaw Families of NC record says James Van Pelt ca 1758-ca 1784 & Mary unknown]. I found possible burials on Find A Grave for them in Sessoms-Tayloe Cemetery, Powelsville, Bertie Co., NC. 2) Their son, David Van Pelt Sessoms 1809-1888 also said to have married a Elizabeth Van Pelt d/o Daniel Van Pelt & sister of Henry B. Van Pelt. If info is accurate, these marriages do lead us in a thoughtful direction.

  2. I think that Edgar Walter Sessoms, son of Aronah Scull and Emily (Holloman) Sessoms, married 1. Louvenia Holloman, daughter of Wm W and Priscilla (Mitchell) Holloman, and had 2 daughters Minnie and Beulah. He married 2. Pattie Florence Merritt, daughter of Andrew J and Louisa (Boseman) Merritt and they had 5 more children.

I wonder about the death date for Edgar’s brother, Elish S Sessoms b. 1857 and d. 1924 as I am having trouble finding Elisha after 1880. However with all the various spellings of the name, that doesn’t mean anything. Any input is much appreciated. Thank you so much for your public web pages – they are a great help as I help edit the Hollyman and Allied Families Tree on Ancestry.
