John Perry, Elizabeth, & Sarah Walton

Sally’s 6-great grandparents (perhaps):

John Perry ca 1690 – 1760 | his parents
& est 1714 Elizabeth ? | her parents
& ca 1725 Sarah Walton ca 1710 – 1761 | her parents
of Nansemond Co VA, Chowan County, NC
& Bertie Co NC

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!

Trying to establish these lines
has been a cooperative project with Zane Perry
and others including Rebecca Starr. James Fort

About 1690, John Perry was born in the Upper Parish of Nansemond County, Virginia, and died in 1760 in Bertie County, North Carolina.
He appears to be the grandson of John Macland whose estate was settled in 1705.

On page 473 of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia Deed Book 1, it gives the estate information of John Macland. It names his daughter Alice Bryant, Grandchildren Nicholas, John, and Elizabeth Perry, grandchildren Needham, William, John, Mary, and Alice Bryant, and wife Elizabeth Macland. John Makerland received a land grant in 1664

John Perry married 1st Elizabeth ?. (She is listed on some 1720s documents with John Perry in Perquimans County)

After Elizabeth’s death he married ca 1725 Sarah Walton

John Perry Sr bought land with Sarah Bond in 1728 and his son John Perry Jun. sold the same land in 1764 and was listed as this John Perry Senr’s son.

John Perry Sr was elected member of the vestry of [North East Parish of Chowan] St. Paul’s Parish 1732, 1734,

Notice for male NC Perry surname descendants: Please consider having your DNA tested.
Three samples from family subgroup 03 at Perry FTDNA website
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/perry/default.aspx?section=yresults can document their ancestry to John Perry b. 1680/90 of Nansemond Co, VA d. 1760 Bertie Co, NC. A fourth sample from the same subgroup 03 can prove his ancestry to Currituck Co, NC. He does not appear to be a descendant of John Perry d. 1760 in Bertie. It is anticipated that the presently unknown common ancestor of these two lines lived in 17C Virginia. DNA may help tie together the several NC lines out of VA, so please consider joining the Perry surname project. Tests can be ordered at a discount through either the Perry FTDNA website above, or www.perry-dna.org. Other companies (Ancestry, etc) also do DNA testing, and your result can be uploaded to the Perry surname project.

e-mail from Zane 4 July 2001 – “First, I believe that John Perry was born in the 1680 to 1690 time frame to have been old enough to be exchanging land with James and Patience Perry in the late 17teens, and to have had John Perry Jr. in 1715. Therefore, I actually believe that HE WAS THE JOHN PERRY MENTIONED IN JOHN MACLANDS WILL. I believe that the Nicholas Perry who was mentioned in the 1703 Census in Nansemond County, Virginia was this John Perry’s brother, and that John Perry probably named a son Nicholas after his own brother. I believe, too, that perhaps the Elizabeth Perry of that same Will may have been the wife of Robert Draughan, but that remains to be proved too. Therefore, I do not believe that my John Perry Jr. (1715-1785) was the one mentioned in the Mackland Will. I believe it was his father — John Perry who married to Elizabeth ____ and then to Sarah Walton and who died in 1760 in Bertie. I believe that this is one reason that Needham Bryant is included in his Bertie County deeds (Needham was also mentioned in the Mackland Will) and why John Perry lived adjacent to the McLendon family (I believe this is a version of the Macland name). So, I think that John Perry (ca. 1690-1760) is the John Perry of the John Macland Will.” 1 Nov 2000 – Zane Perry writes – I’m excited to tell you all that this past week I made copies of a 1764 deed that gives positive proof back one more generation in our Perry ancestry! THE 1764 DEED BETWEEN JOHN PERRY AND THOMAS WRIGHT IS PROOF (that) JOHN PERRY (1690-1760) (is father of) JOHN PERRY (1715-1785). Mr. Steve Watson of Texas, an excellent Perry researcher, pointed out the 1764 Perquimans County deed that proves the relationship between these two John Perrys. Please become familiar with the recorded life and times of John Perry, who was born about 1690 in the Upper Parish of Nansemond County, Virginia, and who died in 1760 in Bertie County, North Carolina. This John Perry was the father of the John Perry who was born around 1715 and who died in 1785 in St. Mark’s Parish of Craven County, South Carolina. This John Perry was a Planter, and owned 17 slaves at the time of his death in 1760. One of his slaves, named ‘Cesar’, appears to have become the property of John’s son, John Perry (1715-1785). It is believed that John’s first wife was named Elizabeth, as she is listed on some 1720s documents with John Perry in Perquimans County. John’s 2nd wife was Sarah Walton, and they married after or about 1725.

e-mail from Zane Perry 8 Nov 2000 – “It seems that the whole family and close associates were attending St. Paul’s. If John Perry Senr. was an Episcopalian, wouldn’t it be odd that his sons Jacob and Phillip would become Quaker? I think, for right now, that John Perry Senr. may still be the son of another John Perry himself, but feel that he is a brother to Jacob and Phillip of Perqs. rather than a father to them. I have never seen Jacob nor Phillip co-witnessing or signing in conjunction with John Perry Junr. of Bertie, but have indeed seen Jacob Perry witnessing for John Perry Senr. in Chowan.

“We know that John Perry Senr. bought land with Sarah Bond in 1728, and that his son John Perry Junr. sold the same land in 1764 and was listed as this John Perry Senr.’s son. At the same time in Bertie, in 1727, a William Perry was selling land around the Roanoke River, and this William Perry co-signed one document with Richard Bond (Jr.) for John Perry Senr. in Bertie. I think that this William Perry may be a son of John Perry Senr., as well as Joseph Perry (who also moved from Chowan to Bertie in the 1730s). If so, then Joseph and William and John Jr. would be from John Perry Senr.’s first wife, while Jacob and Benjamin and James would have been from Sarah Walton Perry (John’s last wife). I know that the Benjamin and Jacob of Perqs. Co. are different men than the ones in Bertie (different wives names), so this again leads me to believe that John Perry Senr. is a brother of Jacob and Phillip of Perqs. Co, rather than a father to them.” [though we are still mulling over this I will place Zane’s thoughts here for ready ref. smk]

Possibly Jacob Perry and also, John Perry, Jr. were older sons who had already received their share of the inheritance prior to their father’s death. The court records say that he left a will; but it has since been lost. Researcher Zane Perry wrote in a recent e-mail 8 May 2000: “John and Sarah Perry’s son, John Perry Junr., left Bertie County in 1769 and went to Sumter County, SC — which is just downriver from where Benjamin Perry moved by about 20 miles! It seems that John Perry Junr. and Benjamin and James all went to the same area of South Carolina. I don’t know whether you realize it or not, but the Cherokee Indian War of 1760-1761 opened that area up to our NC ancestors, and it is quite possible if not probable that John Jr. and Benjamin fought in that war. John claimed land along the east side of Wateree River, and finally lived along the Pocataligo River in present-day Sumter County. Sumter County did not even exist until 1800, with the area where John lived being called Camden District until 1800. Prior to 1785 it was known as St. Marks Parish, Craven County, SC. I have visited the archives in Sumter, and made copies of all John’s documents there. John left his Will in 1777, and listed his family as: Wife Sarah, sons Thomas Perry (see deed dated 1 Feb 1771 between John Harris and Thomas Perry of Bertie, witnessed by Thomas’ 1st cousin Zadock Perry, and Thomas’ sister Mary Perry Sweatman and her husband Augustine Sweatman), Abraham Perry (my 5Ggrandfather), Abial Perry, John Perry, Silas Perry, Job Perry, and daughters Mary Perry (married to Augustine Sweatman), and Sarah Perry (married to William Cole in Bertie County in 1769). John Perry died in 1785 in St. Mark’s Parish, Craven Co., SC, and his widow Sarah Perry remarried to a man named Lowder.” on May 10 he says another possibility would be Thomas Perry of Isle of Wight Co, VA is John Jr.’s father.

1738 Bertie Co, NC Deed Book F pg 1 Francis McClendon & wife Elinor & Isaac Hill to Joseph Perry of Chowan Prect. 2 Jan 1738. 60 £ for 150 A. in Chinkapin Neck at the mouth of the Holley swamp at Bear Swamp. Wit: John Thomas, jurat, John Wills May Ct 1739 Bell’s abstract
Winborne speaks of Joseph Perry of Perquimans County, North Carolina moving to Hertford County about 1765. He says he was a brother of Josiah Perry. He says he had seen a deed from Wm. W. Stephens of Hertford County to Joseph Perry of Perquimans County for a tract of land in the Harrellsville section for 200 acres of land adjoining the lands of Lazarus Thomas, dated 20 June 1765 and witnessed by Benjamin Perry, Phillip Perry and Joel Hollowell, Jr. This land was a part of the patent of Adam Baring, dated 19 Aug 1719. The deed was proven before Benjamin Wynns, Clerk at the October term 1765 of the Superior Court of Hertford County. He goes on to say that Joseph Perry’s wife was Agatha. He died 1826 and John Winborne was administator of his estate. His children were Preston, Mary, Patrick, Joseph, Elizabeth and John D. Perry

concerns Dempsey Graham’s will who (as third husband of Rebecca Perry) has willed away some property left in her possession by her first husband Josiah Perry that was to go to his “legatees”. Apt F, roll 512, Kershaw Co Court of Equity filed April 29 1848″Rebecca Starr

Hi Sally, As a result of recent correspondence with a descendent of Sarah McCorkle, daughter of Tirzah Perry Lee Street, I have reviewed my researh notes and concluded that Sarah was NOT born a Lee. She was a daughter from Tirzah Perry Lee’s second marriage to ________Street. Sarah married Jesse McCorkle. My confusion was caused by the clerk in a suit brought by the legatees of Josiah Perry, and all the married females were listed together, so Sarah [Street] McCorkle was lumped with her married half sisters Mary M Graham, and Rebecca Kerr . This descendent has recently located the funeral home record of Sarah and Jesse McCorkle’s son, and that says his mother was born Sarah Street. Would appreciate if you would correct this on Sallyfamilyplace. Thanks.Hope you are well.

from James Fort Wondering if you had copies of the Chester County probate records that you refer to with the Lee family, sure would like to see those as it does provide a little more insight on that part of the Perry family. Rebecca Cornelius Perry married Isaac Tilman not Jesse Tilman. Isaac dies before 1820 and she settles with his children for 1/6 of the inheritance in order to protect her holdings from her previous Perry Husband. Her Perry husband calls Roland Cornelius his brother in law in his will. Isaac Tilman’s first wife was a MacDonald. . . The fact that Roland is still part of the family doings I would think supports her maiden name being Cornelius.

Children of Josiah Perry & his wives:

Children of Fruzanna Perry and Miles Wells of Bertie Co, later Granville Co
1. Hardy Wells ca 1762 –
married in Caswell Co NC 20 Oct 1784 Elizabeth Parker
family found in 1786 – Gates Co, then Person Co, and 1800 – Nash Co

from e-mail from John Fox the marriage of Miles Wells of Bertie to Fruzanna Perry: I noticed on your site that Fruzanna was listed as an heir in John Perry’s estate (under Josiah’s papers?) and that the dispersion of the estate was completed by 20 October 1761, and she was still listed as Fruzanna Perry. Miles Wells married his Fruzanna ca. 1761, as their first born, Hardy Wells, was born ca 1762. I have a strong hunch that the settling of John Perry’s estate spawned a marriage to Miles Wells, or at least made if very convenient. Very shortly after, on Nov 25, 1762, John Wells adm granted to Miles Wells 4-15-1762. Inv Oct 9 1762 by Miles Wells. Sale Nov 25, 1762, Benjamin Waring, Sarah Wells, Thomas Ward, et al. (Rec of Estates Bertie 1734-1788) Miles Wells had purchased his first land in Granville County by 1765. Since no one seems to have any idea what happened to John and Sarah Perry’s daughter, Fruzanna, I cannot help but feel very strongly that she is the one who married Miles Wells.Another interesting bit is that Hardy Wells married Elizabeth Parker on 20 October 1784 in Caswell County, NC. By 1786 NC Hardy Wells is listed in Gates pg. 007/state Census. In the interim period he and his family were back in Person County, which had been formed from Caswell County in 1796. In 1800 NC Hardy Wells is found in the Nash County Census item 130 Data included in the Census of 1800 for Nash County, North Carolina provides the following information: 1 male 10 and under; 1 male 16 and under; 1 male 45 and under; 2 females 10 and under; 1 female 45 and under. This matches with the known family of Hardy at that time. It appears from your data and from other information I have found that the Parker family were found mainly in the Gates/Nash area, and I believe that the family was there to spend time with Elizabeth Parker’s family. Have you run across a Moses Parker in your research? There was a Moses Parker who owned land in Caswell County, but sold it from South Carolina where he eventually settled. I am not sure about how old this Moses was, and what kind of connection he may have had with Elizabeth Parker, but it does provide pause for thought.

By the way, the John Wills you have in the record of a land transaction among various folks, especially Isaac Hill and Joseph Perry, was the father of Miles Wells/Wills. It was Robert Draughan who with Edward Outlaw, who provided bond for the letters of administration for Miles to settle the estate of his father, John Wills in 1760. Some of your data on your site from Zane Perry, states that he believes that Elizabeth Perry was wife to Robert Draughan. These associations are too close for just coincidence, I believe.

  3. I believe I’m a descendant oh John Perry and Elizabeth. I read this whole article. Especially about the Indian Tribal Leader. I think I’m related to allot of these ppl. Would love to chat.

  4. Miles established two more sons for John Wills of Bertie, when he advertised in the May 9, 1778 edition of Perdie’s Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg, for any claims against the estates of John and Draughton Wills. He was still fullfilling his role of administrator of his father’s estate. If they had any debts to settle, that would have come out of their part of their father’s estate.
John Wills served in the American Revolution in the First Virginia Regiment. He was obviously dead by 8 May 1778 when his brother Miles advertised in Purdie’s Virginia Gazette regarding any demands against his estate. Draughton, according National Archives, enlisted as a sergeant in Capt. Thomas Nelsons’s First Virginia Regiment. He was listed as deceased in a roll for 9 June 1777.

Traditionally, the eldest born son in a family, was named after his paternal grandfather; and the next eldest son was named after the maternal grandfather. We can assume that John Wills’ wife was a Draughton/Draughon.

  5. My gggrandfather is John Perry Major, born abt 1775 Charles City Virginia died 1853 Anderson SC married Mary Marshall Newberry SC. His father was John Major m Rebecca Chandler. They were primarily mentioned in Wilkes cty NC where they had moved from Virginia. I do not know the John who married Rebecca middle name. His family had married into the Thomas Ballard family and original emigrant was Edward Major speaker of house Va who was connected to the Bennett and Butler families.

I cannot find any connection with the Perry name except for the naming of John Perry Major and some geographical similarity. Any information on where the Connection for the naming of John Perry Major could come from would be appreciated.

    1. Miles Wells and his wife Fruzannah had a son named Benjamin. There are no Benjamins in the Wills/Wells family. Fruzannah Perry did have a brother, Benjamin in her Perry family.
