built in 1853 next door to Chowan Baptist Female Institute
Pictured is the first building that burned in 1877,
and the Methodists rebuilt 1881. The school burned again in 1893.
Arson is suspected.

  1. Do the early records of the school show that Lemuel S. Rice taught there? He came to NC from Maine, married a lady from Bertie County, taught at Columbia School in Tyrrell County. In the 1870 Census he was living in Wayne County. Any information you have I would appreciate your sharing with me. I am a descendant of Lemuel S. Rice.
