John Wheeler and Elizabeth Longworth were married 20 October 1768 in Newark, New Jersey.
John Wheeler, son of Ephraim Wheeler and his wife Mary Foster, was born 12 April 1747 O.S near Newark, NJ.
In 1776 he was [Surgeon] of a volunteer company in the Revolutionary War and was present at the battle of Quebec.

He received in 1786 a “Memorial” in New Brunswick, Canada for losses (farm, small vessel, horse, cow, etc.) sustained by his family because of their loyalty to the crown.
They raised their family in St John, New Brunswick.
But in 1807 he removed to Murfreesboro, NC where most of his children had settled and bought a “plantation” which he called “Wheelersville” about four miles out “lying in the land of Kirby Creek below Watson’s Mill. .
. . This old home is now over a mile from any public road. But in olden times it was on the colonial road leading through Northampton and across the Ramsay Farm to the old town of Princeton on the Meherrin River.”

E-mail from James

If you look on the frames of (the portraits of) Esther Cotton and her daughters you will
find written in pencil “Southall & Johnston”. This is the key of how the portraits of Martha Worrell and Richard Johnston ended up with the family at Maple Lawn. Martha Wheeler was a sister of John Wheeler, who built the Wheeler house in Murfreesboro, and therefore an aunt of Julia. She was married first to Mr. Johnston and had son Richard (portrait) and daughter Julia. She secondly married Mr. Morgan and thirdly Mr. Worell, who lived in Maney’s Neck, north of Murfreesboro. By this third marriage she had two sons: Dr. Cyrus Worrell and John W. Worrell. Martha’s daughter Julia married John Wesley Southall, a prominent Murfreesboro merchant, who went into partnership with his brother-in-law Richard Wheeler Johnston and they operated “Southall & Johnston” in Murfreesboro in the 1840s. Julia Johnston (Southall) died fairly young leaving two daughters. John W. Southall later remarried and fathered additional descendants. Incidentally, he was the brother of James Hunter Southall, who married Julia Wheeler’s younger half sister Sarah Clifton Wheeler.

Somehow the portraits of Aunt Martha and Cousin Richard ended up at Mulberry Grove and then transferred to Maple Lawn. Granddaddy recalled that when he was boy that Major Moore received a letter from one of the Worrell relations asking if they could have these pictures. The Major replied that he would like to keep them as long as he lived. Once he died, they were welcomed to them. When he did die nobody ever came forward to claim them.

It seems that John W. Southall and one of the Worrells went to the court stating that Richard W. Johnston was insane and trying to get themselves appointed guardians with control of his property. Then Dr. Moore and Julia Wheeler Moore came into court. They testified that he was sane, and the case was thrown out. Cousin Richard never married but continued to live on his farm in Maney’s Neck up until his death around 1870.
Kate Wheeler’s diary at ECU recounts visits out to his place during the Civil War. This court action apparently provoked a permanent rupture in family relations. So this would explain why Richard left his portrait and that of his mother to his cousin Julia at Mulberry Grove and ignored his Southall nieces and his Worrell half-brothers. James

  1. Hi and thank you for some great info. I was wondering if I was a DAR. From you info, it looks like I am. When I saw Jabez Wheeler, it made me dig a little more. I have Jabez born 8-15-1773 in Newark Essex NJ. Death 11-18-1812 In Winton Herford NC. Then I have Jabez Bell Wheeler forn 11-1812 died 12-1894. He married Mary Frances Proctor born 1847 died 1925.There child (I think) was a Solomon Burford??? born 11-1846. Married Linnie born 1/1870 in Arkansas. ??? There were 5 children: Mary b. 6-1888, Guy b. 7/1890, Dora b. 8/1892, Ida b. 1/1895, and my grandfather Reuel b. 7/1897. DAR say I have to have proof. Do you know if this looks correct, and what to do next. Thank you for any help you can give me.

  2. Thank you for this, especially the information on John Wesley Southall. I live in Murfreesboro and grew up in a house owned by JWS from 1825 to 1842 when he moved to Melrose after he married Mary. His first 4 children were most likely born in our house. Currently looking for info on any slaves who were associated with JWS.
