e-mail from Dr. Barry Hayes:
This at least is the way I have it:
Thomas Wooten (1612?-1670) married Mrs. Sarah Wood, widow of Arthur Wood.
Thomas Wooten first appeared in the Virginia records when Colonel William Whitaker of Warwick County witnessed the transfer of a patent (150 acres) by Robert Eley of Isle of Wight to William Troloder who assigned it on 11 January 1645 to Thomas Wooten, witnessed by Arthur Wood.
See Boddie, Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight, p. 530.
Arthur Wood died before 13 November 1646, according to a deed of Francis England (15 April 1665) that was “recorded” many years later (Isle of Wight Deed Book # 7, p. 390); the deed notes that Arthur Wood’s orphan [Thomas Wood (ca. 1645-1715)] received land (100 acres) bounded by James Piland.
On 4 January 1668, Thomas Wooten, his wife Sarah Wooten (the former Mrs. Arthur Wood), and his son Richard Wooten witnessed when Richard Wooten’s half brother, the aforementioned Thomas Wood, “son of Arthur Wood and Sarah Wooten his mother, relict of Arthur Wood,” sold the aforementioned 100 acres to Richard Bennett at Blackwater (from Will Book # 1, reproduced by Boddie, op cit., pp. 557-58).
Thomas Wooten signed his will on 15 March 1669/70; probated 9 December 1670.
See Chapman, Isle of Wight Wills, p. 10.
It mentioned his wife Sarah and his primary legatee, his only son Richard Wooten.
On 28 September 1686, Thomas Wood witnessed the will of Richard Wooten.
