Sally,I was thrilled to find your web site. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Imogene Avent. She was married to Charles Patton Shaw, and they had moved from Water Valley, MS to Natchez, MS where Charley owned CP Shaw and Company. It was an iron foundry on the Mississippi River. Elizabeth or Bessie as she was known in the Shaw family was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Lawrence. One of her sons was named Lawrence Shaw, and I now know why he had that name. My father’s name was Carl Oliver Shaw and Bessie, his grandmother, helped raise him after his father, Willie Shaw, was killed. Bessie and Charlie’s house on Linten Avenue in Natchez is still as beautiful as it was when they lived in it. Her son, Lawrence, had her committed to the state mental institution in Jackson, MS. and when my father went to see her she told him where she had hidden her wedding ring. She told my dad she wanted him to get it and keep it. She also instructed him to never tell the family he had it. My dad found her ring. Bessie’s son and daughter looked everywhere for her ring but my dad never told them he had it. When I got married 40 years ago he gave me her ring to use as my wedding ring. I have worn that ring for 40 years, and I feel such a connection to Bessie. It is inscribed on the inside with Charley to Bessie March 12,1882. I have a daughter named Avent that one day will get the ring. Just as an extra tidbit…My brother, Billy Shaw (William Lewis Shaw) was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1999. Once again thanks for posting the information. Mary Elizabeth (Shaw) Blakeney 7626 Caney Fork Road Fairview, TN 37062 |

e-mail: Late last night I found that Lafayette L. Moore was son of David Moore who died in Halifax County about 1844. I have not pursued it further than that. I recall that there were a number of orphans of David Moore, Lafayette being one. There was a large Moore family between Scotland Neck and Enfield. One of the early ancestors was Alfred Moore, and there were lots of children and grandchildren. The old home still stands, and there is a small cemetery, but without many stones. David Gammon – 30 Mar 05 David Moore to Eliza Harvey, bond dated 19 Sept 1822. (Parents of Lafayette) From the Court Records of Halifax County: James D. Matthews was appointed guardian of Lafayette L., John H., Gideon T., Peyton P., and Margarett K. Moore, all orphans of David Moore, deceased, August Court 1844. Of these, Gideon T. Moore must have died young in 1847. Portland Whitehead to Margaret K. Moore, bond dated 20 February 1850. From: Lynda AlgeeSent: Thursday, October 06, 2005 10:13 AM |
Subject: genealogy research
I came across your wonderful website last night and wonder if you may be able to help me. On your page about Jesse Powell, I found a brief paragraph about Lafeyette Moore, and his father, David Moore, who died. It shows that Lafayette’s brothers and sisters were put in the custody of James D. Matthews when David died in 1844. My interest in this excerpt is that Margarette Moore, L.L.’s sister, married Portland C. Whitehead. Portland is the GG Grandfather in the family I am researching. His parents have been VERY elusive and we still cannot find their names or anything about them. Portland and Margaret had children (James D., Gideon, Peyton, William, Theodore, Paul, and Silas). I noticed many of their children’s names matched her brother’s names. Portland and his brother and sister were put under the guardianship of uncles (each to a different one) around 1828. . . .
