“emigrants”
Samuel Swaine ca 1625 – 1681/82 | his parents
& Joanna ? ca 1625 – 1694 | her parents
of England,
Watertown, Wethersfield & Branford. CT.
& 1666 Newark, New Jersey
This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!
Samuel Swaine son of William was born in England, he was in Watertown in 1635 and later at Wethersfield. He was “one of the founders of the church and town of Branford.” In 1653 “propounded to the Court and approved as the chief military officer of Branford.” He was deputy to New Haven, 1651-63. As a friend and coadjutor of Mr. Pierson, he accompanied him to Newark. The tradition is that Elizabeth Swaine, his daughter, was the first to land on the shore of Newark [1666], having been handed up by her lover, Josiah Ward, who hastened to secure this distinction for her. In his will Samuel Swaine gives all his estate to his “beloved wife Joanna.”

e-mail from Claire Hield –There have been many researchers who erroneously believe that Joyce Traford was married to Stephen Ward when in fact he was Richard Ward of Stretton Rutland, Eng. I have his will dated 19 Jul 1635 proved 2 Oct 1635. Joyce was his 2nd. wife. Joyce Ward’s will was proved 4 Mar 1640-1. she mentions the same children in her will that he named in his. Neither mentioned a daughter, Joanna. I have never been able to prove that Samuel Swaine’s wife was a Ward. I am a descendant of Richard & Joyce Ward’s son Sgt. John Ward who is supposed to be a cousin of the other John Ward, called dish-turner to distinguish him from Sgt. John.
