?According to family records, (Major) Samuel Harrell was the son of James (Abner) Harrell (1708-1790) who is supposed to be buried south of the John Franklin Cross home in Sunbury, near where Constant’s Chapel was on the right of NC 32 about a mile south of the intersection of NC 32 and US 158 in Sunbury. In some papers of deceased Bishop Costen Jordan Harrell (papers housed now at Emory University), Bishop Harrell [a great grandson of Major Samuel Harrell and second wife Sally Bond and brother of noted history professor, Dr. Isaac S. Harrell] states this information in his writings, sharing that his father and grandfather told him and that he remembered seeing the gravesite. e-mail from Anne

This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!
Noah was born on April 24, 1787. He married Sarah Goodman, and built their home, “Spring Hill” on a portion of the original Harrell property around 1810. Noah’s father left him 2 slaves, stock and furniture he already possessed, as well as notes and bonds worth $250. Located about five miles from Sunbury, and ten miles from Gatesville, the house was still standing in 1952. Noah and Sarah’s children, grandchildren, and some of their great grandchildren were born there. Noah died there on January 24, 1849‚ÄîSarah had died there in 1839.

Samuel Harrell bef 1696 – 1761| his parents

of Chowan County, NC
This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!
Samuel Harrell lived in present-day Gates County near Sunbury, NC. He wrote his will 1 Oct 1761 and died soon after. He named his two oldest sons William and Isaac as executors. The witnesses to his will were Josiah Granberry, Demsey Harrell, and James Costen.
On 15 Dec 1768 in Chowan County Samuel Harrell Jr and wife Mary sold 150 A land to his brother Isaac Harrell . ..”and is part of a larger tract granted to John More and by him sold to Thomas Harrell and by his will given to Samuel Harrell, father to Samuel Harrell party to these present and given by the Father’s Last Will to said Samuel.”

of Chowan County, NC
This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!
William Harrell who wrote will 18 Feb 1762 in Chowan County was the eldest son of Samuel Harrell who died 1761. The possessioners reports of 1756 and 1765 show this.
There was a note in Vestry records that William Harrell’s will was proved April 1762. His wife’s name was Elizabeth. His plantation was to be used by his wife, and then go to his son, Samuel. She was still his widow in 1765.
William names only his youngest son Samuel in his will; but the estate settlements in Oct 1766 name Henry, Abner, Ruth and Abselah. He named his brother Abraham as executor and guardian of his son. The will was witnessed by David Rice, James Costen and John Scott.
[I speculate that His widow Elizabeth may be the Elizabeth Rice who dies in 1801 with Leodicea Harrell as her administrator.]
