The Official and Unofficial Histories of the Cotten Family
by James Elliott Moore
Sept 2018 from nephew James E Moore this note:
Carl Witt has been telling me about a family history of development. His mother’s first cousin Jarvis Godwin Outland, known to the family as Buddy, was killed in the attack at Pearl Harbor when the USS Oklahoma went down. His unidentified remains, along with countless others, were interred at the Punch Bowl Crater, the local of the National Memorial Pacific Cemetery. In recent years, DNA testing identified his remains. A cousin Ann Outland of Pendleton has been campaigning bring him back to Murfreesboro for burial. Buddy’s mother was Eva Cotton Holloman. She is thought to have been buried in the Holloman cemetery out at Buena Vista. Mr. Outland married again and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro. The plan is to inter Buddy next to his father. The tentative date for the ceremony is October 13th. Ann has rented the Methodist fellowship hall there for a reception afterward. Carl will be able to tell you more about this as we get closer to the date.
Buddy’s mother Eva Holloman Outland and Carl’s grandmother Jessie Moore Daughtry were granddaughters of Jesse Cotton Moore, a second cousin of Dr. Godwin Cotton Moore. Jesse married another second cousin of GCM. I think Matilda Daughtry.

Portrait Donated to Murfreesboro Historical Association
Bob Carr, former Murfreesboro resident now living in New Hampshire, has donated a copy of Thomas Sully’s painting of his daughter Ellen Sully Wheeler with her boys Woodbury and Sully. The original, which hung at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for many years, was sold at auction in 2015. It is now in private hands. The copy is 3/4 of the size of the original. Mr. Carr donated the painting in honor of Mrs. Gertrude Revelle in recognition of her tireless efforts on behalf of the John Wheeler House. The gift was unveiled at the annual meeting of the Murfreesboro Historical Association on April 21, 2017.

This work is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!! |
PLEASE let me know if you have another open house at Maple Lawn as I am a Ward descendant and would love to see it. I see you did one in April of this year. I was not aware that anyone did this. I have descended down from the Michael Ward line, Thomas Ward /and Pherabe Hill, Richard Ward, and Thomas Jefferson Ward was my Grandfather. I live in Tennessee but would come in a minute if you ever have another open house. Thanks for all the excellent work you have done with this web site. I have been enjoying it for at least 12 years now. Thanks again!
My grandmother was Josephine ( Josie) Knight Lawrence married to John Southall Lawrence of Murfreesboro, NC. I WOULD like, any information that you may have or can find. She was originally, from Portsmouth, Va.
Looks like I will have to dig through your files here. I have a Joseph Mitchell c 1791 NC married a Sarah c 1792 VA. They are my block walls in my main line. Y Haplogroup is R-P25 which is pretty rare. I have Y hits at various levels of confidence with surnames Mitchell (they ended up in Livingston KY and went on to MO) that are the only other R-P25 Mitchells I have found, plus Moore, Stephenson, Thompson, Wright and even some Morris family folks that married into the Goldens in TN and VA. I have had DNA hits on surnames I cannot connect to genealogically like McCutcheon, Rayburn, Reddoch, Tucker, Turner …. and a LOT of Campbells. And my grandmother told me, unhappily, that Cynthia Ann Parker was a “cousin.” I suspect through her Morrow, Morton, Peden, Richardson people rather than Mitchell.
Joseph and Sarah lived in Union SC around 1820 before moving to Newton, GA (Covington area). A lot of the related families seemed to migrate to Covington MS, but not my Mitchells that I could find. I do know they ended up in Bossier Parish LA and then in Lafayette/Miller Arkansas. specifically Bluestar and Fouke. Some of Joseph’s kids are buried in Magnolia, Columbia, Arkansas.
So just enough similarity to make a bunch of long nights in the files justified!
Families that appear related that came from GA to LA were Edwards, Hodges, Odom, maybe Morris
Sally,
I feel that you and your nephew have done a very kind thing for Chowan University. Is Chowan still a Southern Baptist school or do they belong now to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (Moderate Baptists)?
