There is this James Jones of Pitch Landing who I have also been told we descend from that died about/before 1784 who was married when he died to Sarah Bridgers widow of James Cotten and mother to Mary Jones the wife of Robert Montgomery. I cannot fit all this into the picture without a hitch somewhere. [My James Jones was still married to an Ameliscent when he died in 1783 and left children James, William, Winefred Hays and Sarah Wiggins.] Could the elder James Jones be his father who left Robert Montgomery and Sarah Jones as his executors? I have decided our James Jones of Pitch Landing is the nephew of this James Jones, son of his brother John.
Winborne says both: that Mary, Robert Montgomery’s wife was a Meredith from Murfreesboro and in another place that she was Mary Jones.
I believe that the Rebecca C. Montgomery that you show on this page is my 2nd Great Grandmother. It seems that her parents were Kerr Montgomery and Julia A. Cowper. She moved to Panola County, MS and married a Mr. Augustus P. Smith. All of this information is in my Ancestry.com family tree named A1. Please feel free to view this information. Also please feel free to contact me and I will try to reply back. I am not yet retired and the days are busy with 1 child on the way to college.
WHERE WAS MONTGOMERY MILL IN HERTFORD COUNTY? MY GREAT GRANDFATHER LAWRENCE ASKEW USED TO OWN IT AND WAS MENTIONED IN HIS WILL IN ABOUT 1884?
Did you ever find out where Montgomery Mill was in Hertford Co. ? Lawrence Askew was my ggg-grandfather. Also do you know who Lawrence’s parents were?
okay — it was on the west side of the Ahoskie Swamp across from where the Thomas House was on the Creek. there was a ford at that spot. before Thomas’s Bridge over the Wiccocon.
Just a few miles north of Bethlehem. South of Cofield or Sally Archer’s.
Thanks for the info. If you have any information on Lawrence Askew ‘s parents my email address is lynnmaskew@yahoo.com. I am guessing that a lot of his info was lost when the Winton courthouse was burned.
