Bertie County Court Records [abstract by transcribed by Weynette Parks Haun]
In July 1761 Aaron Asbell, son of Margaret Asbell was bound as an apprentice to Thomas Ward to be taught the business of a cooper [ vol II page 84] [543-278]
In Aug 1764 James Asbell orphan of Margaret Asbell about the age of fourteen was bound until age 21 to Thomas Ward to learn the trade of a house carpenter.
[vol III page 25[ [676-350]
In June 1766 Charity Asbell orphan of Margert Asbell aged about six years of age be bound as an apprentice to Stephen Kater until she is of age [vol III page 43] [734-385]
note: this has to be the Thomas Ward connected with Margaret Asbell [he would be an Uncle of my Thomas Ward who was not born until after 1742 —not included on the 1757 tax list.
DNA has shown these Asbell’s to be the same as that of Thomas Ward.

What luck that I happened upon your great site, Sally! I, too, have a Ward line which possibly started across NC from the northern coastal counties. The 1818 will of Benjamin Ward of Randolph County tells us Lewis Ward, our Buncombe County NC progenitor, was his son. Benjamin is the stopping point. Who is our next generation?
There are reasons to believe our Benjamin, born by my estimate 1739 (?) may have been the “black sheep” of the John Ward, Catherine White family.
Am I correct that your Michael Ward was the father of this John Ward?
The Wards in Randolph in 1779 have the same names as those in John’s will; James Ward, [Richard Ward, Richard S Ward], Thomas Ward, William Ward and John Ward with Benjamin and Jobe showing up in 1780s. (Imagine Wards having the same names!) 1784 Rowan County tax list names Benjamin Ward together with Thomas and Mike, no surnames, having 100 a on Abbot’s Creek [later in Randolph].
Briefly, do you know of anyone who has done DNA testing on our line of Wards? Or can you add to knowledge of the Benjamin Ward noted in John Ward’s will? At this point I am in the process of elimination!
Thank you for acknowledging an old lady! Time is running out.

James Ward & Nancy Brown had:
1. Penelope Ward
married 1773 John Clifton d. bef 1782
I am a descendant of Penelope Ward Cock. I am trying to get information on the correct Nancy Brown. I believe this is the non-famous Nancy Brown. Do you have any of information on her? Was she still native american? My mother’s DNA shows 1% native american and this is only ancestor on her side that has shown possibilities.
What a terrific site you have worked to produce! if you have any advice on how to find my Michael and Wm A Ward, pleaselet me know! I just happened upon your site as I’m researching Michael Ward, possibly (Michael Isaac) b, N C or S C abt 1770-1781. possible kids, Thos b 1800; Isaac b 1801, Nancy b 1809, John Robert b 1804, Minor b 1806, Michael b 1810, James L b 1812 and William Andrew b 1817 either NC or SC. William A Ward is my husband Robert Neal Jennings ggrandfather. 1850 and 1860 census show NC, 1870 and 1880 census show SC). By 1837 Wm A is in Tennessee and married Nancy Jane Holderfield b abt 1817 in Carter, Tenn. or N C. on 1840 census Wm and Nancy in Perry County, Tenn. By 11 Aug 1852, Wm and father Michael and families in either Lawrence or Van Buren County, Arkansas. Malford W (nickname Black) Ward, my husbands grandfather was born this date along with twin Alford in Van Buren, Ark.Have sourced solid facts on people after 1852. Not usre about Williams death…..believe after 1880 in Arkansas, but many people say Tennessee in 1914. My Ancestry.com tree is public, Crawford, Jennings, Talbert and WReede family tree.
