4- great – grandparents of R A Holloman III
Jesse Vann ca 1746 – 1815/17 | his parents
& ca 1765 [Ann] Arline | her parents
of Gates [Chowan] County, NC
This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!
Jesse Vann was born ca 1746. At this moment I am looking at the Edward Vann who died in Hertford Co/Gates Co in 1762 with Mary wife and Edward son as Executors as being his father.
[Note – One researcher says this Jesse was son of Edward Vann ca 1690 – 4/6 June 1752 and Mary ca 1698/1709 -, son of William Vann ca 1656 – 11 Aug 1740 Chowan Co and Sarah.]
This family originally was in Chowan County in the part that became Hertford Co in 1759 and Gates County in 1779.
Jesse Vann’s wife’s father was James Arline.
John Vann said that his grandfather Arline was a very good and honorable man and whatever of worth he possessed he inherited from his mother.
Mrs. Boone wrote “I have seen the date 1719 as Jesse’s birth date, I think this may be an error as he lived until after 1815.
He was also described as “a drunkard.” but he was not by any means as trifling and shiftless as we have made him.
In the trunk full of papers were his tax receipts for 1768 and 69 and 70.
also for 92 and 93 and 1805.”
“in April 1815 Dr. I Foster visited Jesse Vann and again on May 6th.
Just when Jesse Vann died we do not know but the bill was presented on May 27 1817 to John Vann exec of Jesse Vann and paid in Nov 1817.
And there is also a receipt “Paid in full for Jesse Vann’s coffin $2.00”

3. Ann/Nancy Vann

4. Mary/Molly Vann
married Richard T Cross
Louise Boone said her grandmother had told her the children were Jesse, who died young, John born 15 Dec 1768, Molly [Mary], Nancy [Ann] married Saunders.
Louise Vann Boone apparently thought that John Vann and Jesse Vann of Gates County are the same person and had the name John Jesse Vann.
She said her father insisted that his father told him he was the fourth John Vann in direct line.
All recorded instances of his name in Gates and Chowan and his signature is always “Jesse Vann.”

Jesse and Edward sold all their land in Gates County just a year or so before Jesse’s death and presumably moved to Hertford County to live with his son. As his estate is not handled in the Gates County court records. There was a John Vann who died in Gates county about this time.
