Sally’s 6-great Grandparents:
James Rutland Jr bef 1701 – ca 1755 | his parents
& perhaps Esther Cullen or Callum ca 1708 – | her parents
of Bertie County North Carolina
This is my working hypothesis – the way I see it as of this moment!!
I have come to believe that this man called James Rutland Jr was a younger cousin of the James Rutland who married Elizabeth Williams in 1708. as opposed to him being a son.
An Esther Rutland is listed as a member of Sandy Run now deceased.

1755 There is a muster list of Captain Samuel Cotten’s company in Northampton Co, NC labeled after 1748. I date it to be 1755. Thos. Cotten is the Lieutentant on this list; in 1754 he was the ensign. Sam Cotten was promoted to Lieut. Colonel by 1763. The names of James Rutland and James Rutland Jr are both on the list. It appears that James Rutland died shortly after this muster as a son-in law Thomas Beaney is deeding on 14 May 1755 land given to him by James’s will.

1759 James Rutland’s farm was where Northampton, Bertie, & Hertford Counties meet–was used as a land mark in the formation of Hertford county in 1759.
“About the Rutlands: Cousin Jack Tyler of Roxobel owns the farm where the three counties meet. He told me last summer that when he was a boy there was a cemetery there. It had no stones but was surrounded with an iron fence with “Rutland” on the gate. At some point, it was plowed under. E-mail from James E Moore 5 Aug 98

Is the Reddick Rutland the same Reddick Rutland that move to the Spartinburg District of South Carolina?
John Rutland !800 – 01882
My 3rd great grandfather, John Rutland, born 1800. moved from South Carolina to Lawrence County, Mississippi about 1828/1829 and appears for the first time in the 1830 census. His wife Jane, born about 1803, possible maiden name of Gunnell, sons William, B 1822, and Asa. B 1823 and a daughter Rebecca B 1828, came with him.
In all the census he declares that he and his wife were born in South Carolina and that is all we know of his origin. He named his sons William, Asa, James M, Cullen and Berry. Do you have any thought on who his father may be. Just to throw us off in the 1880 census he says his father was born in New York. I think that should have been an NC instead of NY but who knows…we don’t! Thanks so much for your time.
Roy Rutland
Thanks! Lots of good info. Am descendant of Redden, 1755-1834. My family records show him son of John d. 1834, Bertie county, but by mother named Pamela, listed elsewhere as charity. John is son of John , who has will dated may 20, 1762. Redden is father of John 1777-1849, and grandfather of Robert Wilson Rutland 1815-1844 who settled Rutland Florida.
Robert, I have been seeking Rutland ancestors back from SC to Eastern NC. Have you tested with FamilyTreeDNA?
have you seen anything on a wily b rutland
Do you have any time frame and place?

Rutland’s:
Let me start where we all agree Elizabeth wife of Arthur Cotton.
Birth date I se not you have her at c 1723 so if her first born Cullen Cotton was born c 1740 to have been 21 to sign deed as proven. Then she only 17 when he was born.
Before this she was born c 1718.
Next generation:
James b c 1682 and wife Elizabeth Williams b c 168?.
Now given it is allowed women can bear children from 12 onward during the time era of c 1700 a lot of women did bear children into their 40’s. However a proven marriage date of 1708 is given. So even a 1718 would be 10 years into marriage.
Next we have James Rutland b c 166? who married a Elizabeth Basse daughter of Edward Basse1622-1696 and Mary Tucker the Indian Maiden. with a marriage date recorded as 1644. So this Elizabeth would be born c 164? and be 20 years older than her husband.
My line of thinking at this point is that we are missing a James but he there I think the line goes like this at this point.
In Reverse:
Edward Basse 1622-1696=1644 Mary Tucker c1630-c1700.
Elizabeth Basse c 1645-c 17??=James Rutland (I) c1645- c17??.
James Rutland (II) c166?- c17??= ?
James Rutland (III) 1682-1751=1708 Elizabeth Williams c168?-17??.
Elizabeth Rutland 1718-1779=Arthur Cotton 1716-1781.
This seems to lay out with the deeds better and also the every 20 year generations seems more correct than having 40 year olds wait 20 years to have children after marriage.
Question now is who was wife of James (II)?
