In 1837, William Brooks died and Elijah Harrell was the executor of his father-in-law’s estate. At the auction of the plantation, Elisha B Harrell bid on behalf of Elijah Harrell and Elijah was able to purchase his father-in-law’s plantation which is on the Gatesville Road, directly east of Coles Creek and directly south of Eure and Harrell properties. . Donald R Harrell
Walter Scott Harrell was the younger brother of Edward Bascom Harrell, and WSH’s wife, Ellen Victoria Hayes, was the sister of EBH’s wife, (Elizabeth) Leonora Hayes. Margaret Roundtree states that the two couples resided together at the family farm, west of Gatesville, until Bascom bought a farm north of Gates, NC.

Elisha Harrell was born ca 1770 the son of Thomas Harrell who died in Gates County in 1808.
US Census records for Gates Country:
1790 only one Elisha Harrell listed.
1800 the census listings are “Elisha (of Peter)” and “Elisha.”
Peter was the son/grandson of Thomas (the Younger)
and the other “Elisha” was the son of Thomas, Jr.

bonded to Asa Harrell to learn the trade of cooper.
6. Lemuel Harrell ca 1805 – 1822
7. Elisha B Harrell ca 1813 –
married 1846 Missouri Brady
“letter from Lydia A Riddick to son Charles Riddick, 4 Aug 1846: ‘I believe I wrote that Missouri Brady is married to Club foot Elisha Harrell.'”
(N.B. Son Elisha was early reported as Elisha of Elisha, but later as Elisha B. I think the “B” may have been for Beeman … earlier connections: Asa Harrell was married to Rachel Beeman; guardian of children was Abraham Beeman.)
Gates Country Court Records:
– May 1795 – The court ordered that Andrew Savage, orphan of William Savage, about ten years of age, be bound as an apprentice to Elisha Harrell to learn the Business of a Cooper
– August 1795 – Elisha Harrell ordered to jury duty the next term.
– 18 November 1799 – Elisha Harrell (of Peter) on the Grand Jury. I believe that between August 1795 and November 1799 that Elisha Harrell (of Thomas) turned twenty-one thus the designation in jury summons of Elisha (of Peter) and Elisha (of Thomas), as well as the listing in the US Census.
– 31 October 1803 – Elisha Harrell purchased land on the east side of Coles Creek (I believe this to be the same land that was sold in 1819 to Mills Piland).
– Gates Co. Court Minutes list Elisha (of Thomas) as a juror in 1808.
– August Court 1814 – Elizabeth Harrell, widow of Elisha, presents his last will and testament in court. Inventory of estate is presented.
– February Court 1815 – Abraham Beeman is appointed as executor of the estate of Elizabeth Harrell, widow of Elisha.
– November Court 1816 – Josiah Harrell, orphan of Elisha, bonded to Asa Harrell to learn the trade of cooper.
– Various Court Minutes 1817-1828: Reports, accounts of the estates of Elisha and Elizabeth Harrell, by Abraham Beeman, executor. The orphans named at various times were: Elijah, Josiah, Lemuel and Elisha. Also Susan Beeman orphan of Israel
– May Court 1819 – Court approved combining land of heirs back into the original farm and sold the combined land to Mills and Penina (Harrell) Piland.
– February Court 1822 – Abraham Beeman appointed administrator of estate of Lemuel Harrell. Report in Aug Court.
– February Court 1824 – Last will and testament of Thomas Harrell presented. Named as heirs: brothers Elisha and Josiah, sister Penny Piland, brother Elisha Harrell. Cousin Elisha Harrell, executor.
– February Court 1824 – Juror: Josiah Harrell of Elisha (must have been 21)
August Court 1825 – Elijah Harrell appointed administrator of estate of Josiah Harrell. Reports Nov 1825, Nov 1826.
– February 1827 – Abraham Beeman exhibits accounts of Elisha of Elisha
– February 1834 – Elijah Harrell presents final account as guardian of Elisha of Elisha.

The Gates County census for 1786, 1790 and 1800 lists only one Thomas as head of household.
The Aug 1796 Gates Co Ct Minutes state that Thomas Harrell and Stephen Eure were exempted from paying taxes for 1795 since they were over 60 years of age.
thus 1735 is assigned as his birth year.
Sally,
On another email (sent to you as a cc) I cited info on Elisha Harrell and his uncle, Samuel. In my previous EKA info I suggested that Elizabeth, wife/widow of Elisha was somehow related to Abraham Beeman. AB was “tooooo” prominent in being the guardian of their orphans after the death of Elizabeth @ 1815.
Do you have any idea whether or not Elizabeth would/could have been the sister OR sister-in-law to AB?
Also of interest…Elisha purchased two parcels of land:
- Feb. 1801 from Samuel Harrell
- May 1802 from Stephen Eure !!!!!!!!! Stephen and his father Charles were directed by the court to sell the property of Thomas the Younger in 1786 (where Samuel was the executor). Also, Stephen and Thomas, Jr. were VERY “thick” in many dealings recorded in the various court minutes, AND were acknowledge together in the Aug 1796 court minutes as being exempt from taxes, being upward of 60 years of age….they were the only two listed in this entry.
Are these two parcels adjacent? If so this was probably the land of Elisha’s farm that his daughter Pennina and her husband, Mills Piland, purchased from the estate of Elizabeth in 1819.
I am wondering if we could somehow trace the parcel that Elisha bought from Samuel, originally owned by Thomas, and somehow compare the parameters of the deed to those of the land location as described:
“Thomas Harrell (son of Edward) of Chowan Co. made a gift deed to son Peter Harrell of Chowan Co. 34 acres Love and affection to son Peter Harrell land on South west side of Mouth of Cypress Swamp. March 29, 1758 [Chowan Co. book H, page 270]”.
If these parcels are adjacent then there might be credence to my supposition that Peter and Thomas, Jr. were brothers, and that their father was Thomas of Edward…possibly son [grandson] of Thomas Harrell of Nansemond whose land was described in 1681 in the area of what is now called Cypress Chapel in Suffolk, VA, just north of the VA/NC state line in the area of Drum Hill and Middle Swamp.
If so, then Thomas of Edward was also Thomas the Younger in the 1758 NC petition, and the Hertford Tax Receipts.
Also, another point of interest. Years ago I was looking through the Gates deeds on the NC Core Collection Microfilm, and I noted several references to Harrells Mill Pond. Someone (I cannot remember who…might have been in the Gates Court House record room) acknowledged that it was the original name of what is now Taylor’s Mill Pond – I believe this area to be in what is called Cypress Swamp.
Hope all is well.
Regards,
Don

This Thomas Harrell Jr of Sarum-Coles Creek is the son of another Thomas Harrell of Sarum-Cole Creek [bef 1692 – 1771] and grandson of John Harrell Sr. of Dragon Swamp. [per Barbara B Harrell] and great-grandson of the emigrant Thomas Harrell from Kent, Eng. and of Hancock Creek/Parkers Creek [1609 – 1680]
from Janet Hunter
Thomas Harrell died 1782 Gates Co ‚Samuel Harrell was the executor
In 1786 the estate was divided by Cyprian Cross, Charles Eure, and Stephen Eure among 8 heirs who received 11sh 8d each.
Thomas, Charles, John, Josiah, Demsey, Jesse, Lemuel and Samuel Harrell.
Lemuel Harrell died 1782 Gates Co
wife Elizabeth Hargrove, who married Lewis Sparkman 2nd
his orphans were Mary and Levinia
Janet thinks this Mary married 1800 1st Mills Landen and in 1803/4 Uriah Eure.
Josiah and Elisha posted bond for Mary Harrell Landing to be adm. of Mill’s estate. L. Sparkman was one of those who set off Mary Harrell Landing’s dower estate.

Sworn…..Saml. Harrell, son of Thomas…
2. Volume II, page 298, Feb. 1801 – Deed of Sale of Land Samuel Harrell

It is my opinion that the Samuel Harrell listed below was:
a. the son of Thomas Harrell, d. 1782.
b. in 1786 was the executor of the personal property of his father, and was
at the time in possession of the land of his father.
c. cited in the above mentioned jury duty, the last listing of “Samuel

d. listed as having sold his land to his nephew, Elisha Harrell of Thomas of
Thomas, prior to the court of Feb. 1801.

Three possibilities for the father of Thomas Harrell who died in 1808:

“In 1758, there was a petition to have a separate county in the northern part of Chowan Co. Three Thomas Harrells signed this petition: Thomas Harrell, Thomas Harrell and Thomas Harrell, Jr. I believe that this area became part of Hertford prior to the founding of Gates Co. in 1778/9. In the Hertford Co. tax records of 1768 the names of the residents parallel those of the earlier/later records of the Gates Co. area known as Cypress Swamp – west of present Gatesville, NC and along Coles Creek and Sarum Creek. In the 1768 records a “Thomas Harrell” is listed on page 122. On page 123 are listed consecutively, “Thomas Harrell (The Younger)” and “Thomas Harrell, Jr”. I believe that Thomas (d.1808) to be the Junior, and his father was Thomas (the younger). I believe that Thomas (the older) to be either a sibling or cousin of Edward Harrell or not related at all.
“I believe that the father of Thomas Harrell (d.1808) could have been the Thomas Harrell who died in 1786. N.B. that the Harrell family and the Eure family were closely connected. Their plantations were adjacent (Harrell’s ME Church was build on their common boundary line). The following Gates County records of this Thomas Harrell
– May Court, 1784 – Stephen Eure and Thomas Harrell offered themselves as security for the estate of Enos Eure
– February Court, 1786 – On behalf of Samuel Harrell – Charles Eure, Jesse Vann and Stephen Eure were ordered to make a division of the estate of Thomas Harrell.
– August Court, 1786 – The results of the sale of the estate of Thomas Harrell were exhibited by Samuel Harrell, executor.
– November Court, 1786 – Cyprian Eure, Stephen Eure and Charles Eure made a report on the division of the estate of Thomas Harrell.

I looked over the info on my line, and I am wondering about your placing Peter Harrell as a son of Thomas Harrell, d.1808. I have looked him as being the possible brother of Thomas, d.1808. The listing looks like Peter was 8 years old when he received the land from Thomas of Chowan.
I am also wondering about the listing of Pennia Eure as the wife of Elisha of Thomas…I have always thought of her as the wife of Elisha of Peter….probably the “cousin Elisha” of the will of Thomas of Elisha (1824).
I am looking to “ground zero” for our line of Harrells to be the area of southern Nansemond County and Gates County….the area of Cypress Chapel….probably the land listed in the 1681 land acknowledgement of Thomas of Thomas.
