– The Club and the Oaks Garden Clubs jointly won a special National award in Operation Wildflower: “The purpose of this project was to educate the community as to the benefits of using native plants for beauty and low maintenance, while also serving as a habitat for birds and other wildlife. The long-term goal was to add the beauty of wildflowers to the community. A side interest was a controversial College Station ordinance concerning wildflowers in its citizens’ private landscapes. The end results was beautiful wildflowers for city parks.”
as reported in the Bryan-College Station Eagle 19 June 1994 — “The A&M Garden Club and the Oaks Garden Club, also local, received a first place, the $1000 Operation Wildflower Monetary Award from the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc., on May 21 in Stamford, Conn. The clubs were recognized for a joint project they carried out from 1991-1993.
The prize-winning project comprised the decoration of a community Christmas tree with ornaments made from natural plant materials and the sale of additional natural ornaments to raise funds used by Brazos Beautiful to buy seeds for wildflower meadows subsequently planted in Bryan. Brazos Beautiful and the City of Bryan carried out the plantings in Copperfield Park, Haswell Park, and the Wildflower Meadow on North Texas Avenue in 1993.
The Christmas tree project was the idea of 1991-92 A&M president [the late] Marie Branch. Nancy Hazen and the late Bobbe Baker were project co-chairmen. Ancillary projects included a wildflowers workshop sponsored by the A&M Garden Club and local programs on wildflowers presented by club members. The Evening Garden Club, Native Plant and Wildflower Society, Progressive Garden Club, I Have a Dream Garden Club and Brazos County Master Gardeners helped the A&M and Oaks clubs with the project.”
