I have recently found a will pasted on the inside of a chair in our collection here at Hope Plantation, Windsor, Bertie County, North Carolina…. Does anyone know of this family? I would like to have any
information on this family to add to our files on this great Philadelphia Chippendale side chair that dates to the 1700’s.

In the name of God Amen, I Aaron Moore of the County of Hertford in the State of North Carolina do Make and publish this my last will & Testament in the manner & form following viz
First My will and desire is that all My just Debts be paid and that My body be decently buried at the discretion of My Executors hereafter named.
Secondly it is my will and desire that the residue of my Estate which may be remaining after the payment of my just debts be kept together for the Support of my wife & children until they shall arrive at the age of twenty one years.
Thirdly I give bequeath and devise all my estate (after payment of my debts) whether real or personal to my loving wife Elizabeth Moore and my two children Titus & Moses but in case my wife should be delivered of another child as it is expected she will be then and in that case I give bequeath and devise the same to my said wife & three children share & share alike to be divided as the children shall arrive to the age of twenty one years to them & their heirs and assigns forever.
Fourthly & Lastly I nominate Constitute & appoint my friends Godwin Cotton and Solomon Cherry Junr Executors to this My Last Will & Testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set My hand and Seal this 5th day of Novr. A D. 1813 signed sealed and acknowledged to be his last will & Testament in presence of us Jas. F Dickinson, G M Smith, Jos. W Davis.

After Mature deliberation on My debts I have conceded there is not perishable Estate of Mine left in the above will to pay Debts without selling some of My Negroes and as I had rather the Negroes would not be sold I have annexed this Codicil to My will ZC. Item I give unto my beloved wife one single riding chair and gear, one Linen wheel, one woolen & one Loom & gear to her & her heirs forever.

Each trustee or Executor to be paid 100 Pounds Proc. money. 200 Pounds to the poor. Zekel Moore, tract whereon he lives, 1 negro and 100 Pounds. Joseph Moore, son of James Moore, 100 Pounds. Henry Irwin, son of Henry Irwin of Tarboro, 100 Pounds. Polly Toole, 50 Pounds. Henry Irwin Toole, Executor, to use remainder of income to relieve and support any poor of the Church of England, not being dissenters for 10 years. Executors are William Williams of Martin County, Henry Irwin, Henry Irwin Toole, James Moore. Witnesses are Geraldu Toole, Mary Toole, and Jiney Toole.

There is a land record involving Arthur Moore as helping survey land for Jesse Moore in Beufort County, North Carolina, in 1752, which is recorded in Hofmann, The Granville District of North Carolina 1748-1763; Abstracts of Land Grants, Volume I, page 29 — Deed 273, p. 59: September 5, 1754, Jesse MOORE 440 Acres in Beaufort County adjoining William Stancil, Arthur MOORE and the swamp….Surveyed November 28, 1752. Among the chain carriers (assisting in the surveying) were Arthur MOORE and Thomas Bonner.
(2). 1754. Bertie Deed Book H, Page 141. Arthur Moore is a witness to the transfer by Thomas Bonner to James Byrum. September 12, 1754. 40 Shillings for 100 Acres on Kisshy Road. Witnesses are Moses Bonner and Arthur Moore, February Court, 1755. *.
(3). 1755. In David B Gammon’s Abstracts of Wills of Bertie County, NC, 1722-1774 there is a will for Thomas Bonner of November 11, 1754, mentions son, Thomas Bonner, daughter, Esther MOORE, son Henry Bonner, son Moses Bonner and three other married daughters. Amongst the witnesses is Arthur MOORE.
(4). 1756. In the Moore News, Volume II, Issue 32 – B, Page 4 (July 2, 1997), there some information from Judy Cardwell (JudySCard@aol.com), who is researching her Bonner family and located a will of Thomas Bonner, 1756, Bertie County, North Carolina that mentions a daughter Esther marrying a More and it is witnessed by Arthur Moor.
(5). 1758. There is a record of an event involving an Arthur Moore that took place in December 22, 1758, in the Granville District of North Carolina, which is recorded in Saunders, Colonial North Carolina, Volume 5 (1752-1759), page 1090, as follows: “Arthur Moore had entered a piece of land with Col. Halton, in the time of his being Earl Granville’s agent; that he could not get the land surveyed till Col. Halton and Mosely both died after which he applied to Col. Corbin, entered the land with him and paid him the entry; that Mr. Corbin then told him to get it surveyed within twelve months, and he should have a deed for the land; that he had it surveyed and applied for his deed within the time; that there had been a deed for the same land to one Becton; to which Mr. Corbin replied that Becton’s deed was a different piece of land; however, would not make out a deed for Moore who was afterwards sued in ejectment by Becton and judgement was had against him on Becton’s producing a deed executed by Mr. Corbin for the same land, and Moore turned out of possession and imprisoned for near two months till he could pay the costs of the suit.”

James Jones brought suit against Moses Tompson for 6 pounds 17shillings 9 pence proclamation. Said Thomson “broke jail” and afterwards conveyed land to William Outlaw. Said James Jones by his attorney Blake Baker asked for judgment against said land. Bertie became a county in 1722, Hertford in 1759. By my studies, there are 3 different MOORE families in these counties. 2 of them are cousins, the IRISH MOOREs that came to CHARLESTON SC, and about 4 sons moved to NC, including MORRICE and his son JAMES, who mostly was in the Wilmington area, but I think MORRICE move closer to Bertie, and MY, JAMES MOORE born about 1732 (maybe in Scotland) with his brothers LAWRENCE & MOSES MOORE. These 2 are about 4 to 6 Generations apart, according to DNA. DON’T know if the NANSEMOND MOORE are related, BUT, they were all in BERTIE and HERTFORD, at the same time.
