e-mail from Barry Hayes May 25, 01 — Is the Mary Sledge named in the will of Robert Clarke, Sr. in Surry in 1723 yours? I assume that this is the same Robert Clarke who gave 100 acres to Charles Sledge and wife Mary for their life time in 1706. This Robert would have to have been over 90 years old by my calculation. Could Robert have been the Robert Braswell Clarke who had land in 1651 adjacent Col. John Upton as shown on Upton’s conveyance to William Underwood (Isle of Wight Deeds, Wills, and Guardians Accounts, Book # A, p. 32)? I have speculated that he was a close kinsman of Humphrey Clarke, father of John whose second wife was Mary Flake.

note from Sally: At this time I do not see me as a direct connection to Charles Sledge as Peter Hayes and Martha Sledge did not have a son William that I can find. But my father’s first cousin who was like an uncle to us, Capt. Philip StJohn Moore Jr. married Mary Binford Sledge who was a descendant.

  1. The original records of St Edmund’s Parish in Salisbury are in the database, Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812, on Ancestry.com. In this volume you will find the marriage record of John Sledge and Martha Ffort:

marriage: “July 1645: 31st John Sledge and Mathon [Martha] Ffort”

    https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=aMF1&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&indiv=1&db=wiltshireearlyparish&gsfn=John&gsln=Steege&msydy=1645&new=1&rank=1&redir=false&uidh=hr4&gss=angs-d&pcat=34&fh=0&h=2398032&recoff=&ml_rpos=1.

Also in the St Edmund Parish Registers in the same database is the birth of Charles in the ‘Births 1660’ column::

“Charles Sledge sonn of John Sledge and Baptized the 7th of October” [since it is in the births column, believe this means he was born and baptized on the same date]

The other children, siblings of Charles, are in this database on the dates of their births. Some are listed as children of John, when the recorder only listed the father, and others are listed as children of John and Martha Sledge.

Please help spread the word that Charles is not the son of Richard. There is not proof of that; the above shows him as the son of John and Martha (Fort) Sledge.

  2. John Sledge m Martha Fort. THEY are the parents of Charles:

the marriage of John Sledge and Martha Fort: marriage: “July 1645: 31st John Sledge and Mathon [Martha] Ffort” (birth records of their children list her as Martha) (in this ancestry record he is erroneously listed as John Steege although the original record is Sledge) https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=aMF1&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&indiv=1&db=wiltshireearlyparish&gsfn=John&gsln=Steege&msydy=1645&new=1&rank=1&redir=false&uidh=hr4&gss=angs-d&pcat=34&fh=0&h=2398032&recoff=&ml_rpos=1

The SAME VOLUME has the birth of Charles Sledge to John Sledge: Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812: in the Births 1660 column: “Charles Sledge sonn of John Sledge and Baptized the 7th of October” [believe this means he was born and baptized the same day]
    https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=mHo1&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&indiv=1&db=wiltshireearlyparish&gsfn=Charles&gsln=Sledge&cp=0&msfng=John&msfns=Sledge&msbdy=1660&new=1&rank=1&redir=false&uidh=hr4&gss=angs-d&pcat=34&fh=0&h=334785&recoff=&ml_rpos=1

Their other children are listed according to date – some as children of John Sledge when the recorder only used the father’s name, and others as children of John and Martha Sledge.
Please help spread the word that Charles is NOT the child of Richard.

  3. My husband is a descendant of Amos Sledge as well, by his wife Ann Clary through daughter Elizabeth who married Jesse Peebles. DNA testing has shown he is a descendant of Jesse. A lot of your data confirms what I have found. I was so happy to find your site! James – I’d love to chat. In one of your posts you recommend checking the Daniel Horton genealogy. Can you give me his birth and death dates or any other data so I can locate him? I don’t like to add data without proof. Thank you!

  4. I’m currently of the opinion John Perry died on/near Beaver Creek in SC and that the Alexander Tome mentioned below is somehow connected to Francis Tome of Perquimans, whose son-in-law was Gabriel Newby :

William Twaddell and Elizabeth Twaddell his wife and George Perry and Agnes Perry his wife to Stephen Duke of Kershaw County..for 65 pounds sterling…a certain tract or parcel of land situate & lying in county and state aforesaid on the waters of Beaver Creek containing one hundred acres be the same more or less being part of a tract of two hundred & Fifty acres granted to Alexander Tome on the Bounty the fourth day of October Anno Dom 1768…aforesaid one hundred acres of land was subdivided off the Southwest side of the aforesaid two hundred and fifty acres of land…was conveyed by the aforesaid Alexander Tome to John Perry by Lease & Release the 26th of June 1775 & was willed at the decease of John Perry to Elizabeth Perry his wife now Elizabeth Twaddell. 5. Mr. Perry For some time I have researched Charles Sledge. His son John married Rebecca Horton.(Check Daniel Horton Genealogy for an explanation.) Their son Amos was my ancestor, Named for Amos Timms the father of Martha Timms Horton. We have carried the name Amos down to my grandfahter . I have recently found the birth place of Charles, 1660, but have not found the ship’s name that he came to the new world in 1686. Charles, I am led to believe, was the son of John and Martha Sledge hence the name of Charles’ son John and his oldest daughter , Martha. If you care to correspond, please let me know.

  6. Children of Charles Sledge and Mary Clarke:
    1. Judith Sledge Surry Co, VA ca 1697 – bef 3 Nov 1725
married Surry Co, VA John Ellison
    a. Judith Ellison bef 3 Nov 1725 –
    2. John Sledge 1700 – 1750 Surry
married 1720 Mary Rebecca Ivey ca 1700 –
    3. Rebecca Sledge ca 1707 –

his estate inventoried 1771 and 1779 Sussex co, VA
    4. Martha Sledge ca 1709 – [unmarried 3 Nov 1725]
married ca 1726 Peter Hayes ca 1673? – Halifax Co 1761

Henry Ivey was the son of Hugh Ivey and Elizabeth Horton, d/o Daniel Horton. Elizabeth Horton was a sister to Amos Horton who married Sarah Peebles, d/o William Peebles and Martha Green.

William Horton [Amos2, Daniel Horton1] married Elizabeth Brewer, d/o William Brewer.
Their daughter, Sophia Horton, m1 Moab Stevens, m2 Vincent Cato, s/o Henry Cato and Tabitha Brewer, d/o William Brewer.
Their daughter, Celia Horton, married Phillip Perry of Kershaw Co., SC. A descendant of Phillip Perry tested in DNA Group 3…. descendants of John Perry.

    1. The Robert Clark mentioned above and is the father in law of Charles Sledge was married to Ann Wells. Ann is the sister of Thomas Wells who left in his will land to Samuel Clark, his nephew. A sister was Elizabeth [Clark] and she married first Carlysle, and second Musselwhite. The connection to the Sledge family was Mary Clark, who married Charles Sledge and their son John married Rebecca Horton. The four sons that resulted from this marriage spread the Sledge name. Charles was born in 1660 to John and Martha Sledge [not Richard] and came to Virginia in 1686. Jamesseymoursledge1@gmail.com
