Sally's
great-great-great Grandparents:
James Sidney Jones II 1765-1816 | his parents
& Ann Walton 1766-1842
| her parents
of Pitch Landing, Hertford County, North Carolina
This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment!!
James Sidney Jones II and Ann Walton were
married circa 1786 and made their home at the Jones Hole, Hertford Co NC.
James Sidney Jones II son of
James Sidney Jones I and his wife Amilesant was
born at the Jones Hole, Pitch Landing, Hertford Co NC in
1765. Among other things, he owned the Pine Tree Store. He represented
Hertford County in the house in 1792, again in 1796 through 1806. He was fond of high living, elaborate dress, and the accumulation of wealth
(Wheeler.) [He had his own trotting tract at the
Jones Hole.] ". . .his increasing business compelled him to
decline [the legislature]. He waxed richer and
richer, until 1815, when he hazarded a bold speculation, to withe purchased all the
naval stores in Eastern North Carolina. Peace came, produce fell and he was ruined."
(Moore) At
the time of his death, he was clerk of the Superior Court of Hertford
County. James Sidney Jones II died the night of 10 /11 May, 1816.
Ann Walton, daughter of William Walton and his wife Rachel
Hunter was born 1766 in what is now known as
Gates County NC. Her father died in 1771. At the Aug. Ct. 1783, Gates
Co, Nancy Walton and Selah Walton came into Court and made choice of Timothy
Walton [their brother] as their Guardian. Ann's son James Sidney Jones
III, the lawyer, built onto the existing "overseer's house" to
make his mother and sisters and himself the new home "Maple Lawn" in 1828.
Ann Walton Jones died 4 Feb 1842.

From Historical Sketches of Hertford County, N.
C. by John Wheeler Moore (Published in the Murfreesboro Inquirer in 1877-78) "In
1791 along with General Thomas Wynns and Harry Hill of Maneys Neck, appeared for the
first time, the wealthy and courtly James Jones II, of Pitch Landing, in the General
Assembly. Mr. Jones was the son of Colonel James Jones I and was born in 1765, in the time
of Governor Dobbs. The first James Jones kept up the old English notion of primogeniture
and left to him the bulk of his estate. He had very much the taste and habits of his
father. The old race course still resounded with the hoofs of flying racers, and went
smooth and happy in the summer when he returned year after year from his seat in the
Assembly. He was a favorite and trusted agent of the people until his business compelled
him to retire from the legislature. (James Jones served in the House from Hertford County
1792 through 1806.) He waxed richer and richer until 1815. His dream of greater
wealth vanished, for heavy purchases brought him great losses. He soon died and was buried
May 7 (?) 1816.
Mr. Jones had a large family.
Major John W Moore in his History
of North Carolina to illustrate the manners of the day tells of this
fashionable wedding;
"Isaac Moore of St Johns, the son of
James Moore and grandson of Captain Arthur Cotton was to wed Miss Polly
Jones the oldest child of James Jones the magnate of the Pitch Landing
neighborhood. It was a grand affair in the estimation of the participants.
Edenton and Norfolk assisted Murfreesboro in furnishing the viands and
finery seen on the occasion. At nightfall of a beautiful October day (in
1803), cavalcades of visiting friends poured in from every side. Most of the
company came in their double gigs; General Wynns with his coach and four.
The house swarmed with visitors from Hertford and Bertie. The Negroes from
Mr. Jones different farms were well-nigh all on hand showing the utmost
alacrity in disposing of vehicles and horses. The great fire-places in the
house blazed with warmth and welcome to the incoming guests. The gracious
mistress of the mansion took charge of the ladies in one wing of the
building, while her courtly husband presided in another. Huge tubs of apple
toddy were there, and so enticing was the beverage that even Parson Wright
did not disdain to test its qualities.
At an
early hour in the evening, the bridal party repaired to the drawing room and
the holy bands were knit. The wedded couple were remarkable for their good
looks. They were attended by Jesse Cotton Moore, the brother of the groom,
who waited with the stately and handsome Miss Betsy Jones. Young James
Wright Moore, cousin of the groom was partner with his affianced bride the
gay and beautiful Miss Esther Cotton of Mulberry Grove. Dr. James Walton of
Bertie, cousin to the bride, attended with the pretty Mary Sharp. Starkey
Sharp, a kinsman of both parties with the lovely and gentle Miss Annie
Outlaw. Young William Jones stood up with the gay and sparkling Miss Sallie
Askew. William Walton and his future wife, Miss Celia Outlaw, completed the
retinue.
The Negro fiddlers had been discoursing loud if not eloquent music
during the progress of the supper. At last came the opening of the ball. Mr
James Jones and his brother Colonel William Jones, General Wynns and Mr
Robert Montgomery all participated
in the opening minuet. And then during the entire night with flying feet the
revel rolled on. The young people danced and courted, but the more sedate of
both sexes retired to different rooms and formed quiet parties of whist.
In
an out house in the yard the Negroes were having a rival entertainment.
Fiddles and Banjos could be faintly heard mid the clatter of resounding
feet. Their fun was fast and furious and plenteous perspiration attested the
depth of their devotion to the charms of the dance."
In the Edenton Gazette 21 July 1808--"On Monday, the 4th of July . . .the citizens
of Pitch -Landing and its vicinity, and a great number of respectable citizens from
Bertie; with a large collection of respectable Ladies from both counties, met at the house
of Mrs. Hill, for the purpose of celebrating the day; when James Jones, Esq. was chosen
President, and Gen. John Scott, Vice-President, they sat down to an elegant Dinner,
Prepared for the occasion . . ."
According to the Major he (James Jones II) was "a member of the legislature from
1792 to 1806, until his increasing business compelled him to decline. He waxed richer and
richer, until 1815, when he hazarded a bold speculation, to withe purchased all the
naval stores in Eastern North Carolina. Peace came, produce fell and he was ruined."
He died 10 May 1816 and was buried at the Jones Hole.
