stead of Robt. Forster who has left the district. [served until April 1742]
1744 - March - Isaac Hunter again elected to the Vestry.
Selected Church Warden again.

Isaac
Hunter lived near what is now called the "Sugar Run Road." a short distance
South East from present-day Sunbury, on land granted his father William Hunter.
1744/45 - Isaac Hunter of Chowan bought the water mill from
John Rice.
The Mill was left to his son Jacob.
e-mail from Hunter Cole -
Last week my sister and I returned from an exploration of genealogical
records in Edenton, N. C., and Gatesville, N. C. We found that
Isaac Hunter of Chowan bought the water mill from John Rice (1744-45).
In the Chowan records there are four mentions of this continuing
transaction. Isaac left the mill to his son Jacob. At Merchants
Mill Pond state park outside Gatesville I asked a ranger about the mill.
He said the site, known and identifiable (near Corapeake), had returned
to nature.

.Daniel, a bachelor, died intestate in
1797, and his heirs were required to advertise in a Raleigh newspaper in
order to seek out any other claimants to Daniel's siblings. The
resulting depositions from Chowan, Gates, Perquimens, and other counties
locate many heirs. The children of each of Daniel's siblings and their
spouses are listed in these court records
Isaac of Warren and his brother Jesse moved from Chowan to Bute County
(renamed Warren), where they married the Alston sisters. Isaac Hunter
and Solomon Alston owned plantations along Shocco Creek in the southeast of

Jacob Hunter son of Isaac stayed in Gates Co. He was a member of the Hillsboro
Convention of 1776. He was appointed by the April Congress in Edenton District to
establish the manufacture of arms, and to secure muskets and bayonets for the army. He was
2nd Major of Chowan Minute Men September 9, 1775. Like his father before him he was a
member of the Vestry of St Pauls Parish and Lay Reader at Constance Chapel. Prior to
the Revolution, Jacob Hunter and the members of Constance Chapel, except the Gordon
family, severed relationship with the English Church and everything pertaining to England
and became just as ardent members of the new Methodist Church.
Sarah Pugh Hill "was the
daughter of Abraham Hill and Judith,
his wife.
Abraham Hill was the son of Henry Hill and Mary Pugh. Mary Pugh
was the daughter of Daniel Pugh, who with his brothers Frances and Thomas,

Isaac Hunter born at the Jacob Hunter home near Sunbury in what is now Hunters Mill
Township, Gates County on Aug 29, 1759 and died Oct 22 1816. He owned the Jacob Hunter
home place, the Mill and Mill Pond and all the land lying on the right hand side of the
road going from the Mill towards Suffolk up to what is now the Kellog Farm. He farmed and
operated the Mill all his life. At about age 21 he was appointed the First Public Register
of the County, he moved to Gatesville and purchased the Tavern later known as the United
States Hotel; he also bought the corner store which he operated. Several years later he
returned to his home located on "Sugar Run Road.". The road on which Isaac
Hunter lived was the Main Road leading from Edenton to Suffolk and over which the stage
ran. In 1804 the main road was changed to run through what is now Sunbury which crossed
over the old Mill Pond. Isaac Hunter built a new house where the roads cross. In the yard
of his new home a sun flower came up and it is family tradition that he named his place
Sunbury. Like his father, Jacob, he left the English Church and became a leader in the New
Methodist Church; and it was at his home that Bishop Asbury stayed on several of his
visits to the County. He gave the land on which Philadelphia Methodist Church was built
and was one of those instrumental is establishing this Church. Isaac Hunter gave the new
church in Sunbury its name according to family tradition.
